Josh O’Connor Predicted as Potential Next James Bond
An unexpected challenger has emerged in the conversation surrounding the next Bond casting
Despite many rumours regarding a variety of names and famous action actors, one unexpected name has begun rising.
Josh O’Connor is known for his nuanced performances in emotionally driven, character-focused films. He often gravitates toward dramas exploring vulnerability, relationships, and identity, such as God’s Own Country and La Chimera.
With that in mind, he is then not one of the names that springs to mind when you consider who could be spearheading the next era of the action-heavy ‘James Bond’ franchise. O’Connor has been growing massively in the public eye recently, mostly beginning with his starring role in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, which made him a relevant hearthrob in the eyes of many, particularly those stans on X.
Recently, The Hollywood Reporter made predictions for 2025 and one of them included that a star rising in fame and on the cusp of stardom would emerge as the frontrunner and inevitable challenger to take on the iconic role: that star being Josh O’Connor.
This follows reports from TheInsneider that claim that Aaron Taylor Johnson is no longer in the running for the role of Bond, though it’s unclear whether this is related to the massive bombing of Kraven The Hunter this month or if they are just exploring other options before officially signing anyone on.
O’Connor’s name emerging in these conversations signals a transformative moment for the Bond franchise. It could redefine the iconic character by infusing him with greater emotional complexity and a modern sensibility, moving away from the hyper-masculine archetype of the past, which previous Bond Daniel Craig made huge strides to move away from, but O’Connor would be undeniably different.
As an actor celebrated within the LGBTQ+ community and recognised for championing progressive storytelling, O’Connor could bring an entirely new perspective to Bond, reflecting a more inclusive, nuanced era for the franchise. His casting would likely emphasise sophistication, depth, and emotional resonance over brute force, aligning Bond with contemporary cultural values while still delivering the charisma and intrigue the character demands. This shift could not only reinvigorate the franchise but also appeal to a broader, more diverse audience, ensuring Bond remains relevant in a changing world.
There is a level of irony in his name emerging for Bond considering that both O’Connor and Craig were involved in an actors-on-actors interview earlier this week, and that they can next both be seen working together in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. With their connection, it’s possible that Daniel Craig helped push O’Connor into this Bond narrative and perhaps could even have some tips for him if this casting occurs.
O’Connor also has a great relationship with Amazon MGM Studios, having just starred in Challengers for them and becoming a fan favourite, so it’s not unlikely that they have considered him for a role in one of their major franchises, considering how well they collaborated last time and would potentially want to work together again.
Whilst nothing is official and Josh O’Connor is yet to be mentioned by anyone significantly involved with the franchise, it’s entirely possible that the ever-growing popularity surrounding this famous Englishman could lead him to a starring role in his most different role yet, leading one of the most major action franchises in cinema history.
