New Poster For James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Released, Synopsis Revealed Ahead Of Trailer

Ahead of the release of Creature Commandos’s fourth episode, DC Studios has just dropped a new look in the form of a poster for Superman, starring David Corenswet. You can see the brand new poster, in full, below.

The poster was released as a motion poster, showing Superman flying with the tagline “Look Up”. The poster was also scored, giving us audiences a first listen at the score composed by The Suicide Squad composer John Murphy. The score seems to take elements of both John Williams iconic score from the Richard Donner films, as well as Hans Zimmer’s theme from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and create something new and refreshing.

What Is The Production History Of ‘Superman’?

Talks regarding a new Superman film were discussed in the “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” video uploaded on January 31st, 2023. In this video James Gunn talked about the slate for the first few years of the new DC universe simply known as the DCU. Superman: Legacy was part of that slate and was described as “The true start of the DCU”, written and later confirmed to be directed by James Gunn himself.

The film takes inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic run written by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Casting for the roles of Kal El / Clark Kent and Lois Lane was a tough battle, as each role had three actors in the running. The role of Superman had David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney while the role of Lois Lane had Rachel Brosnahan, Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor. Eventually David Corenswet would land the role of Kal El while Rachel Brosnahan landed the role of Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult would still end up receiving a role in the film as the antagonist, Lex Luthor.

The film was renamed to Superman in February 2024 when filming in Norway began. Filming lasted until July 2024 and included locations such as Trilith Studios in Atlanta with additional on-location filming around Georgia and Ohio.

The synopsis for the film can be read below:

Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures.  In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

We previously heard from director James Gunn that Superman will be placed in a world that already has metahumans which is further backed up by the casting of Nathan Fillon as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

Additionally the film will seemingly pick up on the events of Creature Commandos as Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is set to appear alongside María Gabriela de Faría’s Angela Spica / The Engineer which will lay the groundwork for the upcoming The Authority film. We can also see some setup for Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow with the appearance of Krypto and casting of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl.

Superman is directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce and more. The film hits theatres on July 11th, 2025.
