It’s been 17 years since the last film in the 28 Days Later franchise, but now fans can relax (or get spooked) with the release of a cryptic teaser for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. Find out what the 28 Years Later teaser actually means below.

The 28 Days (Later, Years) franchise follows the consequences of the “rage virus”, a virus originally developed in chimpanzees, which spread following the release of monkeys as a result of activist intervention. The virus spread is the key factor in the franchise, with the first film taking place 28 days into the apocalypse, the second film taking place 28 weeks into the apocalypse, and so on and so forth.

The first film, 28 Days Later, was a major success and kick-started a career for Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who starred alongside Naomi Harris, Brendan Gleeson, and Christopher Eccleston. The third film, which was announced as part of a trilogy in January 2024, is set to star Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, with Murphy expected to reprise his role as Jim

What Happens In The ‘28 Years Later’ Teaser?

On December 7th, the 28 Years Later Movie (@28YearsLaterMov) X (née Twitter) account released a cryptic 13-second long teaser largely consisting of nothing. Interspersed between these longshots of a black screen were clips of an aerial view of an island, sometimes having the film’s pathogen logo placed above it, an upside-down red skull, as well as dirtied rags tethered to a crucifix with an arrow through the head.

All of this is shown to the audio of beeps and blips, which is actually Morse code. The morse code translates to one word- “Tuesday.” It’s likely that this is teasing a full-length trailer, which may drop on Tuesday, December 10th.

We have two theories about this island, the first being that it is the home to our protagonists, while the other is that this is the objective of our team, with the team potentially aiming to obtain something from this island, or reach a safe haven on this island. Watch the teaser below:

28 Years Later stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Cillian Murphy. The film is directed by Danny Boyle, and penned by Alex Garland. 28 Years Later hits theatres worldwide beginning June 20, 2025, courtesy of Sony Pictures.
