Where we last left off, Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and the Coven entered the eerie space known as the Witches Road. As the team traveled, after a little detour along the way, they finally arrived at the first trial: the trial of the Water Witch, Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamataz). The trial saw the Coven get poisoned, and it was up to Jennifer to brew an antidote. While the team was successful in completing the first trial, it was not without its casualties, as Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp) met an unfortunate end.

Episode 4, “If I Can’t Reach You / Let My Song Teach You,” was, to put it lightly, a magical experience. The episode sees the coven take on their second trial, the trial of the Fire Witch, Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn). The trial was based on the mystery behind Alice’s mom, Lorna Wu (Elizabeth Anweis), who was said to have died on the Witches Road.

As the characters explore the room, we see lots of imagery depicting the various methods used to kill witches throughout the ages, as well as masks representing strange creatures. This, coupled with the use of sound effects, gave this trial a creepy vibe. It gave me the same threatening feeling as the hallucination scenes from episode 3.

One of my most anticipated parts of the episode was the performance of the Ballad; this time remixed in a rock version that holds a deeper meaning for Alice as it was originally sung by her mother and became the tool to conquer this trial. Every version of the Ballad has been a wonderful experience, and this version has quickly become one of my favourites.

The episode also saw the return of Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), the new green witch for the coven. We get to experience lots of scenes between Rio and Agatha alluding to their relationship, and it shows the strong chemistry that these two possess. However, my favorite interaction in this episode was between Agatha and Teen (Joe Locke), who allows us to see a different version of the wicked witch, Agatha after he encounters danger during the trial. My heart instantly melted seeing the care that these two have for each other despite Agatha’s rough past.

Overall, this episode has quickly become one of my favourites, and I’m confident it will stay at the top of the list as the series progresses.

What Happens in Agatha All Along Episode 4 (Recap)

The episode opens with Agatha staring at Sharon’s corpse, and Teen is digging a grave for her. Alice reveals that her mom did not die on The Road but instead died on tour. Her mom said the road would save her, and that’s why she agreed to walk. While trying to move further, the group gets into an argument over the fears of not having a green witch, followed by who’s responsible for Sharon’s death.

Agatha suggests summoning a new green witch to progress through the road with. They are successful, but to Agatha’s distaste, it’s Rio Vidal. Agatha runs off with Teen following her, and the rest of the coven follow shortly after. They arrive at the next trial for the fire witch. Alice runs off in the opposite direction, but the road forces the team to confront it.

Alice warns everyone about the dangers of this room, and the team then looks at their new outfits. Exploring the room shows lots of imagery depicting various ways witches were killed and masks of different beasts. Alice reveals that her mom tried to open the road with her concerts using her fans as a coven. Agatha and Rio have a conversation, and Agatha takes advantage of it to warn the others about Rio.

Teen plays a vinyl, which lets off a terrible sound. After the record player is broken, Lilia reveals that the team has been cursed, and the trial begins. Lilia is the first to be affected by the curse. Alice draws a protective ring to remove the curse. Jennifer is the next to be attacked, and Alice learns that there’s more to her misfortune than meets the eye. Teen is attacked, but the curse rejects him, only pushing him away.

Agatha realizes that the solution is playing Loran’s version of the Ballad. It’s revealed that this version is a protection spell. While playing the song, Agatha is attacked. She powers through it to perform. During the performance, we learned that Teen had a glass shard in his stomach. Alice is able to see the curse; she’s determined to kill it. She’s successful, the curse is finally broken, and the trial is complete.

Teen faints before they can leave. Agatha is determined to save him and asks for solutions. Jennifer brews a potion that heals his wound. They then allow Teen to rest with Agatha watching over him. The rest of the team talk about their life and experiences. Teen wakes up, and they have a heart-to-heart ask about the sigil, which can also be removed when it’s no longer needed.

Agatha joins in the conversation with the rest of the coven, and Rio reveals a bit of her backstory with Agatha. The two are alone when they speak further. Rio then reveals that Teen is not Agatha’s son. Agatha smiles and then walks off before the episode ends.

My Prediction for Agatha All Along Episode 5

Using the official stills for episode 5, we know that the trial will involve a slumber party. I thought this trial would center around Teen. However, he’s not part of the coven, so the likely candidate would be Agatha. There’s also evidence from episode 4 to support this. Upon leaving Alice’s trial the roots are colored purple to match Agatha. We previously saw the roots appear blue in episode 2 and red in episode 3. The behind-the-scenes featurette also revealed which trials Rio and Lilia will undertake, further confirming that this is Agatha’s trial.

Agatha’s trial, as mentioned before, will be slumber party-themed, possibly something she missed out on in her younger years. In the teaser trailer, we see that the team will make use of an Ouija Board, possibly summoning a spirit that later possesses Agatha. She then seemingly attacks Teen, which may motivate one of the members with magic (Lilia, Alice, or Rio) to attack her, which will ultimately lead to Agatha gaining power again. This could spell trouble when Agatha wants more.
