Zachary Levi on wanting to be part of the DCU

Banking on the resounding success of 2025’s Superman, Gunn’s DCU keeps attracting new talent, but even those who have swam these waters before are not against the idea of another round. In an exclusive conversation with Feature First, Zachary Levi revealed that he would love to work with James Gunn, and in the DCU.
When asked about his interest in getting involved in the newly formed DCU, currently manned by The Suicide Squad director James Gunn, he had this to say:
“Oh, yeah! I mean, listen, I loved playing Shazam. It was one of the most fun experiences. I grew up watching Christopher Reeve’s Superman and Tom Hanks in Big, and I got to be both in one role, you know? It’s such a fun role. I loved my ‘Shazamily,’ as we affectionately call it. Every one of those actors, young and old, we really shared an awesome experience over two films.
So, yeah, I mean, yeah, if James and the powers that be said, “Hey, we’d love to bring you back as Shazam, or if it was some other DC character.” I love comic books, I’ve been reading them since I was a kid. And, you know, so long as it was something that was, you know, like, really worthy, like, a character or a story that was like, “Oh, wow, that’s new or that’s different, or that’s a flavor we haven’t really seen yet before.” Obviously, there are so many superhero movies at this point and so you just want… that’s one of the things I loved about Shazam, that it was very specifically different than most other superheroes. But yeah, I mean, listen, I think that would be a lot of fun.”
Levi found success portraying a rare light-hearted superhero, Shazam, in the gloomy and dark DC Extended Universe. Though his first outing was met with favorable reception from critics and fans alike, the same couldn’t be said for the sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Levi says he would love to play Shazam again, but he is ready to take up any character so long as he finds that character to be worthwhile and that he can be part of a newer, fresher DC Universe.
