‘Yellowstone’ Watch Order Explained: ‘1883’ To ‘Marshals’ & ‘The Madison’
We thought it right to show you how to experience the timeline of Yellowstone in both release order and timeline order. Find out the Yellowstone watch order.
Paramount’s biggest TV franchise since Star Trek, Yellowstone is an extensive universe blossoming with spin-offs and prequels following a 5-season first series. Now, with two new spin-off series releasing next month, we thought it right to show you how to experience the timeline of Yellowstone in both release order and timeline order.
‘Yellowstone’ Release Order
‘Yellowstone’ Seasons 1 (2018) Through 5 (2022-24)

Starting in 2018 with its first season, Yellowstone follows the modern day story of the Dutton family, led by ranch owner John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and the ranch’s residents: Dutton’s children (Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, Kelsey Asbille), and the ranch wranglers (Cole Hauser, Jefferson White, Forrie J. Smith). The show follows long running feuds between the Yellowstone Ranch and land developers as well as other interested parties, such as Gil Birmingham’s Thomas Rainwater.
‘1883’ (2021)

The first prequel for the Yellowstone franchise follows the Dutton family, generations before the birth of John Dutton III, as they migrate from Texas and into Montana seeking a better life. It was released in 2021 and serves as a miniseries with no planned direct continuation.
‘1923’ Seasons 1 (2022) and 2 (2025)

The second prequel for the Yellowstone franchise picks up a generation after 1883, and continues the story of the Dutton family. It stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton and their struggles through the Prohibition, drought, and early stages of The Great Depression. Like 1883, 1923 has concluded and is not expected to be renewed for a third season.
‘Marshals’ (2026-)

The first sequel series to Yellowstone, Marshals is set to continue the story of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) as he becomes a US Marshal. Son Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) will also appear. Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) is not yet confirmed for the series.
The series will be the first ever procedural series in the Yellowstone franchise, streaming on CBS rather than Paramount Network or Paramount+.
‘The Madison’ (2026-)

The first true spin-off of the Yellowstone franchise and the second sequel series overall, The Madison follows a family that moves from New York City into the Madison River Valley, the same valley where The Duttons hold a powerful monopoly. No Yellowstone characters have been confirmed for the series yet, but we can expect some crossover with stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell in the future.
‘Yellowstone’ Timeline Order
‘1883’ – Taking Place in 1883
The 1883 miniseries takes place in 1883, making it the first project in the Yellowstone franchise timeline.
‘1923’ Season 1 & 2 – Taking Place in 1923-1924
Again, the season obviously takes place in 1923, making it the second project in the Yellowstone franchise timeline.
Directly following up the first season, the 1923 Season 2 takes place in 1923 and 1924, spanning the Winter season and the hardships that come with it.
‘Yellowstone’ Season 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
The main show takes place from 2018 through 2023, showcasing five tumultuous years for the Dutton family.
‘Marshals’ Season 1-
Marshals directly follows the events of Yellowstone Season 5 and continues the journey of Kayce and Tate Dutton, as well as Thomas Rainwater and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty).
‘The Madison’ Season 1-
It’s hard to say where The Madison fits in, but due to it taking place in present day and being disconnected from the main show’s events, we can safely place it last for now.

Yellowstone was created by Taylor Sheridan, who continues to mastermind the franchise for Paramount. Both Marshals and The Madison begin airing next month, and you can watch them below via our JustWatch link.
