Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn Could Be Recast For ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

A new report suggests that Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn could be recast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Fans might be in for some disappointment ahead of what is expected to be the next Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum, with fan favourite character Aragorn expected to be recast to maintain a more youthful appearance.

The news comes from Caleb Williams of Knight Edge Media who, in an exclusive article, alleges that the Andy Serkis directed film will be recasting original trilogy actor Viggo Mortensen, who played the character in the three Peter Jackson directed Lord of the Rings films, with younger talent. This comes after Viggo Mortensen previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise.

The report says Andy Serkis has already met with several actors in contention for the role. As pointed out by Williams, this does not mean Mortensen will not return however, with the possibility of the actor book ending the film as King Elessar a la Ian Holm in The Hobbit trilogy before his passing.

This might be sad news for many Lord of the Rings fans, given the time in which the film takes place in. Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum bridges the eleven year gap in The Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf (set to be reprised by veteran Ian McKellen) enlists Aragorn to track down Gollum (Andy Serkis) to learn vital information about The One Ring. Also expected to return to their role is Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, the adventurous hobbit that is at the centre of the Lord of the Rings story, who eventually destroys The Ring for good.

Who Else Could Appear In ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’?

Other characters that could appear in the film are Sean Bean’s Boromir, Hugo Weaving’s Elrond, Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, Lee Pace’s Thranduil, and an aged-up Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Frodo’s uncle.

Production for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to enter production in May 2026. Casting announcements are expected soon, in order for the film to make its December 2027 release date.
