‘Twisters’ Sequel in Development
A new report claims that a sequel to the 2024 hit Twisters, a follow-up to the original Twister, is now in active development at Universal.
With Twisters proving to be a box office hit, grossing close to $400m on a reported $150m budget, Universal is wasting no time in turning it into a full-fledged franchise and working on a sequel. The film’s success, showed that audiences still have a huge appetite for large-scale disaster movies, and with the right cast and spectacle, this series could become one of Universal’s biggest properties moving forward.
A major factor in Twisters‘ success was its incredible cast. Stars like Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, David Corenswet and Kiernan Shipka have skyrocketed in popularity, and their involvement gave the film strong appeal across different audiences.
Powell, in particular, has become one of Hollywood’s most bankable rising stars following Top Gun: Maverick and is now one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, with his next movie being an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright.
Daisy Edgar Jones continues to grow and is even in talks for a role in the upcoming Prince Charming movie at Disney. If this star-studded cast returns and new powerhouses get added in, a sequel has the potential to draw even bigger crowds.

According to reliable insider Daniel RPK, Universal Studios are actively developing the sequel. Though it is in very early stages, news could be announced as early as CInema Con, which begins next week in Las Vegas.
The success of Twisters also proves that disaster movies can still thrive in modern Hollywood, especially when done right. If Universal continues investing in big, thrilling storm-chasing spectacles, this franchise could grow into one of their biggest action series. With the advancements in visual effects and a world that’s increasingly interested in extreme weather phenomena, a Twisters sequel makes perfect sense and could cement itself as the next great disaster movie franchise.
The use of these disasters as spectacle and beatable is well-fit for a modern escapist audience, it helps to reframe the way we see these phenomena and makes it entertaining along the way.

Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Katy O’Brien and more.
