Released only two weeks ago, The Wild Robot is one of the best-reviewed films of the year, holding a strong 98% critics score on the Rotten Tomatoes site. It’s a box office breakout too, grossing $111M against a production budget of $78M at the time of writing, a sequel is now officially in development.

An exclusive article by Zac Ntim and Melanie Goodfellow for the entertainment industry outlet Deadline details the confirmation of a sequel. At the Deadline Contenders event, director Chris Sanders (How To Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch) confirmed that a sequel to The Wild Robot is in development at Dreamworks Animation.

This is far from a surprise for Sanders, with the director previously commenting on plans for a sequel back on September 27, 2024. When asked about the sequel possibility Sanders said “I would very much like to, I think the entire crew really, really involved themselves in this film in a way that I’ve never seen before, myself included. This was a labor of love on the part of everybody at the studio, and yes, I think I’d love to go and stay here for a while.”

At an early access screening last month, Feature First had the privilege of watching the film early and deemed it “a movie I can definitely see becoming an instant classic with many, and to me is one of the best Dreamworks films to date.”

The Wild Robot adapted Peter Brown’s 2016 childrens book of the same name. That book went on to receive two sequels, The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects. It’s likely that at least one of these will serve as a basis for the upcoming sequel.

The Wild Robot stars Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Catherine O’Hara, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, Mark Hamill, Stephanie Hsu and more. The film was released in US theatres on September 27th, 2024. A sequel is in development and is not currently dated for release.

Up next for Dreamworks Animation is Dog Man, an adaptation of the Dav Pilkey book of the same name. That film stars Peter Hastings, Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher Stephen Root, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. Dog Man hits theatres in January 2025.
