I spoke with Bella Ramsey about their recent desires to work closely on British Independent Films, claiming they have had a great time with working on big Hollywood productions like The Last of Us and Game of Thrones that have given them the privilege and visibility as an artist, but now seek to focus on choosing the stories they specifically want to tell in the independent filmsphere.

Zak Ahmed: Earlier to The Hollywood Reporter, you mentioned how you’re switching your focus to independent films like Sunny Dancer and you’re taking a step back from major Hollywood projects like The Last of Us and Game of Thrones. Carrie Coon said recently about how she had to do the White Lotus to lead her own Broadway show. How do you feel about this type of clash between independent cinema and mainstream cinema as an artist that’s trying to tell your own story and choosing what interests you?
Bella Ramsey: Thank you for your question. I’ll talk about it terms of Sunny Dancer. For me, it was the best possible way to make a film, not just an independent film. The sort of blueprint of it that George and Ken created, I want to direct in the future. They’ve literally given me a blueprint of how to make a film, doing it with kindness and generosity. It never felt exploitative. I think film often, and this industry often can, and it was the most joyous six weeks spent in Scotland. Everybody so wanted to be there. I think that’s what’s so special about low budget independent film, is that everyone’s there because they want to be there, and we want to make something really special. It’s the sort of family experience of being on any set that is amplified by being on an independent feature like this.

Bella also reiterated their immense love and enthusiasm for their experience making the film. Possibly declaring it as their best work yet, both professionally and privately.
Bella: Sunny Dancer was honestly the best experience I’ve had in my career so far. And it will be very hard to top. It’s a big statement, but honestly, the truth. That was probably the best professional six weeks and also probably one of the best personal six weeks of my freaking life, so thanks, guys.”

Sunny Dancer premiered on Friday Night at the Berlinale with Bella Ramsey as the lead.
