A re-release for Matt Reeves’ The Batman featured new exclusive footage for HBO’s The Penguin. Find the footage description inside.
To celebrate the upcoming release of HBO’s The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Millioti, Warner Bros. re-released 2022’s The Batman alongside a new featurette for the movie.
‘The Penguin’ Footage Description
The new featurette opens with Colin Farrell who introduces the featurette. We then see some new footage with voice-over from franchise overseer Matt Reeves, who explains that he wanted the series to take place a week after The Batman, with the Penguin filling in the power vacuum left after the plot of that movie.
Next, Colin Farrell comments on how much he loved playing Oswald in The Batman despite having not many scenes. This coupled with the fact that Reeves wanted to build out the character led to the creation of the show. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc adds to this stating that they wanted to explore him in a deeper way.
In a new scene, Oz zips someone up in a bodybag and throws them down a flight of stairs. He also communicates with Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). We also get looks at the slums of Gotham, as well as a long shot of Oswald’s penguin hobble. Reeves describes the series as “looking at the profound corruption of Gotham” and that it is a “dark American dream story.” Reeves also reveals that Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in The Batman) wanted Sofia Falcone (Cristin Millioti) to be his successor, thus putting her at odds with Colin Farrell’s Oz.
LeFranc also talks about the connection of Oz’s relationship with his mother to his psyche, before a short clip of Deirdre O’Connell’s Francis Cobblepot plays. Many more scenes, both made for the show and behind-the-scenes play with narration from producer Dylan Clark, Colin Farrell, Lauren LeFranc and Matt Reeves. To end off the footage, which lasts about five minutes overall, Reeves talks about relating the show to the real world, taking the fantastical world of Gotham and putting audience members in the shoes of the characters.
The Penguin stars Colin Farrell, Cristin Millioti, Clancy Brown, Mark Strong and Rhenzy Feliz. The series was created by Lauren LeFranc, executive produced by Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves and will be released on HBO and Max on September 19.
