New images on the Ohio set of Superman give us our first clear looks at David Corenswet and Edi Gathegi.
Following set preparation earlier this month in Cleveland, Ohio, James Gunn’s Superman has finally begun filming in the city. With this news comes our first looks at David Corenswet, Edi Gathegi, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce and Frank Grillo on the set of the DCU movie.
Earlier this year, the internet was home to severe discourse regarding the official reveal of Corenswet’s super-suit, so many fans were anticipating the eventual reveal of a clean and well-lit image of the costume.
The Man of Steel can be seen alongside Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, both brandishing comic-accurate clothing. Corenswet in his blue suit with the Kingdom Come emblem (on both the cape and chest), and Gathegi in his leather wear and ‘T’ shaped mask. Brosnahan is in a purple dress, while Pierce dons a black vest and a blue long-sleeved shirt.
Although not much can be deduced about the plot, we know that the Daily Planet is under attack and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific has teamed with David Corenswet’s Superman. In one image, Brosnahan’s Lois Lane can be seen exiting a ship alongside Wendell Pierce’s Perry White, with the latter smoking a cigar.
Additionally, Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett’s Steve Lombard, Christopher McDonald’s Ron Troupe and Mikaela Hoover’s Cat Grant can be seen leaving the ship as well. It can be speculated that this scene takes place towards the end of the film, with the Daily Planet under attack heightening the emotional and personal stakes of the plot.
Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) was seen on set with an unshaved head. His unshaved head seemingly gives way to the theory that the actor, who will be portraying Lex Luthor, is not filming currently, given the lack of hair on the supervillain. His comic-book accomplice was also seen filming, giving us the first look at Sara Sampaio’s portrayal of Eve Teschmacher.
Perhaps the biggest reveal from filming is a scene with Superman being detained by Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr and an unnamed black-masked figure with a U on his chest. These two characters have not been cast in the film officially but many have speculated the involvement of Grillo, as well as Ultraman, who in the comics is a clone of Superman. In the same scene, María Gabriela De Faría’s Engineer tags along while escorting Superman into his arrest.
The black suit of presumably Ultraman has led fans to believe that James Gunn is tapping into some potential of the comic iteration of The Boys’ Black Noir, who was also a clone of a superman, but this time the villainous Homelander. Grillo’s involvement also begs the question whether Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is also involved in the film, due to her leadership of Flag’s Creature Commandos squadron. And finally, onlookers in Cleveland were gifted a look at David Corenswet as Clark Kent, with curly hair and his signature glasses.
Superman is directed by James Gunn who wrote the film, and is executive producing alongside fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran. The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mr Terrific, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film is currently scheduled for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025.
