‘Stranger Things 5: The Finale’ Opens With $25M-$30M at Domestic Box Office
Weird? Maybe. But the box office has not seen Stranger Things than this. Read about the Stranger Things finale box office.
Over the New Years holiday this week, Strangers Things 5 released the finale of the series in theatres for the first time ever. It was released part of Netflix’s plan for the unveiling of the show, releasing the first volume on Thanksgiving, the second on Christmas Day and the finale on New Year’s Day.
Now, the series finale has hit theatres, playing across North America, grossing an impressive $25M-$30M range. Netflix does not report its numbers, but this number is estimated to be correct, as reported by reputable trade outlets. It’s a record for Netflix movies, surpassing their last event release — K-Pop Demon Hunters, which grossed just under $20M domestically.

Due to the cast of Stranger Things 5 having contractual residuals for the project, Netflix could not charge tickets for the release, instead loophole-ing with concession vouchers and reserved seating. The strategy seemingly worked as it outgrossed even Avatar: Fire and Ash over the two public holidays domestically, and that film is on track to gross nearly $2B domestically.
Stranger Things 5 sees the Hawkins group team up for one last time, preparing to battle Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bowers) and find out the true nature of what lies beneath Hawkins, Indiana. The finale specifically follows the group as they journey into the Upside Down and Dimension X to kill Vecna before he can turn Earth into a hellscape.

Stranger Things 5 is developed by The Duffer Brothers and stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Brett Gelman, Linda Hamilton, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
