The Sons of Liberty In DC Comics

The Sons of Liberty was created by Jerry Ordway and first appeared in Superman Vol 2 #53 (March, 1991).
The group was founded by former U.S. Air Force Major Charles Holcraft, whose goal was to overthrow the American government. He believed that the United States drifted from the core principles of the American Constitution and wanted to restore “American Values.” This group also acted as a benefactor for Benjamin Lockwood aka Agent Liberty.
Holcraft was apprehended by Superman, and the group was close to disbanding due to his dealings with the nation of Qurac. The remaining members of the Sons devised a plan to kill Holcraft before he could testify before a senate committee. This involved the kidnapping of then Senator Peter Ross’ fiancee, Lana Lang. In exchange for Lana’s life, Ross would have to smuggle a gun and kill Holcraft before he could testify. Ross did not comply and Agent Liberty killed Holcraft instead.
In a surprise turn of events, the group met its downfall by Agent Liberty. When the group tried to silence Ross, Lockwood opposed the idea, he would later learn from Superman that the Sons had earlier assassinated Ross’ predecessor, and he personally terminated the Sons’ prominent members, Jay Harriman and Ronald Kramer. In order to put an end to the group, Benjamin gathered all the information he had on the group and forwarded it to Clark Kent of the Daily Planet to expose them.
The Sons of Liberty saw a temporary return when Lockwood’s former comrade, Paul Devlin revived the group. He ordered the group to plant a series of bombs across Washington, DC and attempted to kill the first family with a suicide attack on the White House with an airplane loaded with explosives. Agent Liberty managed to foil the assassination and dismantle the Sons which also resulted in Devlin’s death.
