‘One Battle After Another’ Budget Reportedly Over $140M+
PTA’s next film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, gets a surprising new production update.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming action-packed crime film, One Battle After Another, is reported to have a budget ranging from $140M to $175M making it the most expensive film of the director’s career.
Beginning production back in January 2024 and wrapping by September, Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film, which is seemingly titled One Battle After Another, is one of the most anticipated films of this year. The film is said to be a contemporary adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, which is set in northern California in the midst of the Reaganite/Orwellian year of 1984 and at its core is a father-daughter story.
Anderson’s upcoming film is also said to be his most mainstream project yet and “the closest we’ll ever get” to a full-on action film by the director as, after recent test screenings, we’ve heard a bunch of details including that the film goes from one big elaborate action set-piece after another with “lots of stunts” including a phenomenal car chase.
New Details Regarding The Budget Of ‘One Battle After Another’
It’s no surprise that the budget for this film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will be big taking into account the statements above about the film being action-packed and such. Film insider Jeff Sneider revealed that the budget of One Battle After Another is in the range of $140M to $175M, which is Anderson’s most expensive film to date with his second and third most expensive movies being Licorice Pizza and Phantom Thread which only had a budget of $40M and $35M respectively.

Additionally, the film is currently slated to release on August 8th but with zero promotion and marketing seen so far, which is unusual for a blockbuster with this size of budget, seemingly hinting at a delay of the film. Sneider added that they’ve been test screening the film recently to strategize how they’ll be releasing it which makes some think that the film could premiere at the Venice Film Festival with a wide release delay to somewhere in the Fall, which could also help it with awards if its seemingly built for commercial failure at this point.
It’s also not entirely too late to begin marketing the film as it’s possible we could see a first teaser dropping for the film during this year’s Warner Bros. Cinemacon panel on April 1st. This could position it to play before some of the biggest blockbusters of the year such as Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Jurassic World: Rebirth and so on.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor and Alana Haim is currently slated to release in theaters on August 8th.
