Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Revealed: Everything We Know So Far
After many long years of speculation, the Nintendo Switch 2 has finally been revealed. Here’s everything to know about Nintendo’s successor to the best-selling system.
This announcement has been anticipated by the gaming community for nearly as early as when the first console was been released. This week, fans have finally been shown the successor to the Nintendo Switch, officially known as the Nintendo Switch 2. You can view the announcement trailer below:
What Happens In The Reveal Trailer?
The trailer opens with the Nintendo logo followed by the original Nintendo Switch. The joy-con slides off and the screen grows bigger, the tablet sheds off its old shell and we see an indent form on the left side of the tablet. We see the USB-C port form alongside speakers of some sort followed by the power button, volume controls, light sensor, exhaust fans, headphone jack and a second USB-C port on the top.
The new stand forms sporting a u-shaped design with the same width as the stand found on the Nintendo Switch OLED. The stand opens to its maximum width before the console jumps from the surface and we see a shot of the original joy-con. They both spin revealing an all-back, larger design. Red accents appear by the analog stick and the ZL/ZR buttons on the right joy-con, the same is done for the left joy-con with Blue accents.
We see the ABXY buttons on the right joy-con being pressed followed by the analog stick on the left joy-con being spun around. The two joy-con jump in wrist strap attachments and experience mouse-like movements as they drift across a table. They jump out of the straps and attach themselves to the Switch 2 Tablet with a clapping sound effect (The Nintendo Switch 1 previously had a snapping sound effect).
The joy-con detaches and snaps back into place as a “2” appears on screen followed by the Nintendo Switch 2 Logo. We get additional angle shots of the console followed by gameplay from an untitled Mario Kart game. The Tablet then rests in the console’s dock, we’re we witness docked-mode gameplay of the Mario Kart game as well as our first look at the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Grip.
The right joy-con snaps slightly out of place on the grip, we then see “2025” on screen indicating that the new system will be released this year. We are then greeted with a graphic indicating that most Nintendo Switch 1 games will work on the new system, noting that more details will be released on the website at a later date. Finally, a Direct focused on the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced for April 2nd followed by hands-on events for the new console being available directing viewers to the official website for details.
What’s New With Nintendo Switch 2?
While at face value the new system shares a lot of visual similarities to the Nintendo Switch, there’s a lot of changes that you may not expect. Here’s everything new with Nintendo Switch 2 thus far:
- Bigger Screen – Perhaps the most obvious change is the screen size, opting for something larger than the base and possibly the OLED switches. While the resolution and screen type remains unknown we can expect those details in the upcoming Switch 2 Direct.
- Magnetic Joy-Con – The Switch 2 has drastically changed the base controller, opting for a magnet-based system to attach to the sides of the tablet creating a new “snap” sound effect which will likely be used in marketing.
- Joy-Con Mouse? – During the trailer we see the joy-con attached to the wrist strap and experience mouse-like movements as the slide across the table. Early leaks suggested that Nintendo will allow the joy-con to act like a mouse for their FPS titles such as Splatoon
- A Second USB-C Port – The addition of a second USB-C port on the top could introduce an array of new accessories but most importantly it helps tabletop users charge their system with ease, a problem mostly found with the original Nintendo Switch.
- No More Stick Drift? – While this one is mostly speculation, it’s possible that the aftermath of Stick Drift on the Nintendo Switch has motivated Nintendo to switch to Hall-Effect Joysticks which are said to lower the risk of drifting.
- Better Performance – While this falls into the speculation space as well, it’s likely that the new system will see a boost in performance to keep up with modern times and expand the system’s opportunity for third-party support.
Which Games Are Coming To Nintendo Switch 2?
From the trailer we saw footage from an untitled Mario Kart game, likely a Mario Kart 9 which many have been anticipating. We can expect this game to be a launch title with the upcoming system however there are likely titles in the works for the console’s first year. All of which are expected to be revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct dated for April 2nd, 2025.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available in stores in 2025. Pricing and a more specific release date will likely be revealed in the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2nd.
