This adaptation was long in the making, taking almost a decade to be released. The film was first announced in August of 2015 and went through numerous writers such as Aaron Berg and Oren Uziel before finally settling on The Last of Us scribe Craig Mazin, with Eli Roth set to direct.

That proved to be the beginning of production woes. The film went on to film between April 1st, 2021, and June 22nd, 2021. Two weeks of reshoots were also conducted in January, 2023, with Tim Miller now directing new material from Zak Olkewicz.

The first footage from the film was released back in 2022 during Cinemacon, which gave attendees the first looks at Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black as the iconic characters. The first trailer was released on February 21st, 2024, introducing us to this chaotic world taking inspiration from the Mad Max saga and Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. The trailer had its fair share of dissatisfaction from fans, with many expressing that characters were miscast. The film was also given a spotlight at Cinemacon on April 10th, 2024 with an extended trailer.

Today, the second trailer was released, giving us more footage with the main cast. You can watch the trailer below:

The new trailer opens up on the planet Pandora with a shot of the lost vault on the planet. The trailer is on the shorter side at one and a half minutes, mostly showing off the adventure to the vault. Like the other trailers, the focus is very much on the action comedy of the film, as it shows off multiple scenes dedicated to the comedy angle.

In the trailer, we see a bar fight focused on Lilith, a Roland hallway action scene, the team taking down a kaiju, a chase scene, and a different hallway fight scene with Krieg, so it’s clear this film will certainly have a lot of action, as the trailer teases.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to Borderlands.

A new poster was also revealed, featuring the team of misfits holding hands while overlooking the vault on the planet Pandora.  You can view the poster below:
