The second season of Adult Swim’s hit DC series, My Adventures With Superman, has come to a close, and, sadly, it’s a downgrade.

This review is based on all ten episodes of My Adventures With Superman S2, made possible by screeners, courtesy of Adult Swim.

Despite opening strong with its first two episodes, the season opted for a shift in direction, progressively moving away from the dynamic between its three leads. As I have previously stated, the characters are the thing that makes the show for me, and I dislike the decision to not focus on the romance between Jack Quaid’s Clark Kent and Alice Lee’s Lois Lane. The show, instead, opts to focus more on the overarching plot of the series.

The show continues with its story of pitting the Man of Steel against Amanda Waller and Task Force X, the former having teamed up with billionaire Lex Luthor. Superman’s heritage quickly comes into contention when a mysterious alien visitor, Kara Zor-El, visits Earth. Even though it’s a typical plot, it still held the potential to be fun. And the way the series is left off by the end leaves too much to be desired.

Episode 5 saw the introduction of Kara Zor-El (Kiana Madeira), colloquially known as Supergirl, and how she connects with the overarching villain of the season. On paper, the plot seems alright, but it is not balanced with the show’s other aspects, making for a clunky and misdirected season. Kara as a character, however, is quite a treat, and her dynamic with Ishmel Sahid’s Jimmy Olsen is both hilarious and cute.

Despite my gripes, I will stand by saying that the animation looks wonderful. The colour palette of the season allows the show to pop and become more vibrant against a collection of unique backgrounds. You can feel the amount of care for the show’s music as well. It’s unique, charming, and representative of the show’s character.

In future seasons, I do hope the show strays from the strictly technological standpoint that it takes with its characters and plot to opt for some more fantastical and alien takes.

My Adventures With Superman Season 2 stars Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, Kiana Madeira as Kara Zol-El/Supergirl, Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, Debra Wilson as Amanda Waller, and Max Mittelman as Lex Luthor. The series is now streaming on Adult Swim and Max, with the finale releasing July 21.
