‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Runtime Revealed (Exclusive)
Ahead of the first trailer releasing for the movie, we can officially reveal the final runtime of Mortal Kombat 2.
The hype has slowly been building for Mortal Kombat 2 following a recently released teaser poster that included the first look at Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, seemingly a major player in the movie. Whilst no trailer or actual footage has been released yet, we can officially confirm a runtime for Mortal Kombat 2.
How Long Is Mortal Kombat 2?
The runtime for Mortal Kombat 2 is 1 hour and 56 minutes, which is longer than the first movie by 6 minutes, meaning they boast similar runtimes. With the runtimes being almost the same, it seems they have found a sweet spot and the right amount of time for telling these stories and perhaps hints that the sequel could follow a similar narrative structure. With not much need for fluctuation and introducing a new cast of characters, it could tread some similar steps.
However, as most of the characters were introduced in the first movie, hopefully most of this time is attributed to finally building on the world they have established and embracing some of the heavier gore and over-the-top nature of the franchise – which should lead to a better experience for all audiences, fans and newcomers alike.

While the first film was praised for adhering to the traditional brutal and well-choreographed fight scenes, many fans felt it failed to capture the spirit of the beloved video game franchise, particularly due to its focus on an original character, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), instead of established fan favourites. This will all change in the sequel as one of the most famous characters from the franchise, Johnny Cage, will be joining the fight.
The movie was also part of Warner Bros.’ controversial 2021 release strategy, where all major films debuted simultaneously in theaters and on Max (fka HBO Max). While this allowed more people to watch from home, it undeniably hurt the theatrical experience, as many action-heavy films rely on the immersive atmosphere of a cinema. This strategy also likely limited its box office potential, as casual audiences may have opted to stream it instead of buying tickets.
Despite the low box office, the first Mortal Kombat was the most streamed movie on HBO Max and the most successful from their day-and-date project, which included other films such as The Suicide Squad and Dune which proved that the demand for this franchise was there.

Mortal Kombat 2 is directed by Simon McQuoid and stars Karl Urban, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Lewis Tan, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Adeline Rudolph. James Wan, Todd Garner, Toby Emmerich and Simon McQuoid are producing.
