In a new public appearance, actor and director Andy Serkis commented on his involvement in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Earlier this year, it was announced that several new live-action Lord of the Rings films are in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures, starting with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. In a series of press releases and trade updates, Rise of the Planet of the Apes actor Andy Serkis was reported to reprise his role as Gollum and to direct the film. And now, appearing at the ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024, Andy Serkis has commented on The Hunt for Gollum.
“The Hunt for Gollum is a work-in-progress title. It may not end up being called that. It’s going to very much be the world of Middle Earth according to Gollum’s experience of it. It is so early; it would be unfair to commit to anything at this point. But I will say that it will be a deep dive where we investigate Gollum’s character. There may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back. I’m not going to say who.”
The above indicates that the title may be changed, as most working titles are altered in some form to better fit the final product. Serkis also teased the involvement of other Lord of the Rings characters. If the film takes place during the events of Fellowship of the Ring, as I have previously theorised, Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn and Ian McKellen’s Gandalf may very well return, with the two actors both having expressed interest in the film. Serkis continued with some tidbits about the behind-the-scenes in the production process thus far:
“We started to talk about this roughly about eight months or so ago. They were saying, ‘Andy we really want to reinvigorate Middle Earth. There are so many fresh stories that we want to get involved with. We want to launch this new wave by taking us back into the world of Gollum.’ They asked me to direct. This is a dream come true. To work with the people I love working with in a country I adore working in.”
Ending the conversation, Serkis further commented on longtime collaborators Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh, saying he has a “psychic” connection with the two producers. On a final note, he commented on the mindset he would be going into the film with, stating his fear, excitement, and willingness to face a challenge.
Warner Bros.’ Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is directed by Andy Serkis, and produced by Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, and Philippa Boyens. It is executively produced by Serkis, Ken Kamins, and Jonathan Cavendish and is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, as well as Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The only star currently attached to the film is Serkis, reprising his role as Gollum.
