Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ Special Presentation Starts Filming In NYC

Jon Bernthal is undeniably a busy busy man. Between juggling press junkets for recently released projects like The Amateur, The Accountant 2, Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, and filming his next slate of works, including the likes of The Odyssey, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and soon Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he more than has his hands filled. Now, the actor is set to reunite with a past collaborator for a return to his first solo Punisher project since the Netflix series ended. 

Reinaldo Marcus Green and Jon Bernthal have worked together twice in the past. The first time for 2021’s King Richard, which went on to win Academy Awards, and 2022’s HBO series We Own This City. Now, they’re teaming for The Punisher special, with Bernthal making his screenwriting debut, co-writing alongside Green, who also directs.

Bernthal has now begun production on The Punisher special presentation for Marvel Studios and Disney+. The special is currently shooting in New York City under the production title Jolly Roger. The special commenced production on July 17th and is expected to film through the first week of August.

Marvel Studios has had a rough relationship with special presentations, with the first, Werewolf by Night, being received well critically, but failing to make a splash in terms of viewership. The second special released the same year, back in 2022, with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which saw the return of all the main cast and crew, and the debut of Maria Bakalova’s Cosmo. Similarly, the special was received well. But  in the three years since they released, there has been no word on the future of special presentations, besides The Punisher. 

The Punisher special presentation is expected to air in 2026 following the release of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Punisher will then appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and Mark Ruffalo.
