‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’ Now in Development as Series Instead of Film
A new report has alleged that Mad Max: The Wasteland is moving forward at HBO Max as a miniseries instead of as a film.
Following the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga back in May 2024, fans have been eager for the next instalment in George Miller’s now legendary franchise. But, fans have also been doubtful about the series seeing the sun again, with the big-budget apocalypse dystopia continually grossing minimal amounts at the box office, falling into a particular niche.
The next film, which like Mad Max: Fury Road, has been in development for decades. Titled Mad Max: The Wasteland, it was meant to be a prequel to Fury Road, following the year leading up to Max meeting Furiosa and The Immortan Joe in the 2015 film.
A new report from the YouTube channel Mad Max Bible claims that the project is back in development, but under a new medium — a miniseries. The YouTube channel says that industry insiders say Miller is working on an episodic Mad Max story, following Max Rockatansky as he builds his Interceptor (the legendary vehicle last seen in a Furiosa cameo). The story would also follow Max creating the enemies he is fleeing from at the beginning of Fury Road.

Naturally, if the series were to get the greenlight, it would presumably stream on either HBO Max or HBO, depending on the level of prestige Warner Bros. Television would offer the project.
Mad Max was last seen in Mad Max: Fury Road, where he was played by Tom Hardy. Hardy recently was interviewed by the press for his series MobLand, where he was asked about filming The Wasteland in which he replied:
“I haven’t got the memo.”
Mad Max as a franchise began in 1979, with each and every project thus far being directed by creator George Miller, who has also worked on The Twilight Zone Movie, Lorenzo’s Oil, Happy Feet, and Three Thousand Years of Longing.
Mad Max: The Wasteland is in development at Warner Bros. with George Miller directing and Tom Hardy starring in the titular role.
