Live Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ Officially Announced

Ahead of the release of the live action adaptation of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ and just after a screening of the film, Universal Studios has officially announced a sequel.

Live Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ Officially Announced

During their CinemaCon panel, Universal officially announced How to Train Your Dragon 2, a sequel to the upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated film, showing just how much confidence they have in the first movie before it has even hit theaters.

This move suggests that Universal sees How to Train Your Dragon as a potential major franchise and that they’re betting big on its success. The studio’s decision to screen the entire film at CinemaCon, rather than just a clip or another trailer as everyone is for other projects, only reinforces how much faith they have in the quality of the movie, as early reactions from journalists and industry insiders have been overwhelmingly positive.

A major reason why this live-action adaptation seems promising is its cast. Mason Thames, best known for The Black Phone, takes on the role of Hiccup, while Nico Parker (The Last of Us) plays Astrid, both of whom bring a strong emotional presence and acting chops to their roles. With director Dean DeBlois, the mastermind behind the original animated trilogy, returning to helm the film, it’s clear that Universal is taking great care in preserving what made How to Train Your Dragon so special in the first place.

The original animated movie was a massive success due to its emotional storytelling and the deep bond between Hiccup and Toothless that resonated with audiences of all ages. It also became well renowned for its score, which is now one of the most iconic scores in modern cinema and has already been massively highlighted and overplayed in the marketing of the remake.

If the live-action version can capture the same magic as the original then Universal may have a new flagship franchise on its hands.
