Janet McTeer Eyed To Portray Professor McGonagall In HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’
Development is ramping up on HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series.
We were initially tipped off that two actors were being eyed for roles as Snape and McGonagall in HBO’s Harry Potter just over a week ago. The first actor was Paapa Essiedu in the role of Snape. Initially, we took this with a pinch of salt due to the nature of the source, however, The Hollywood Reporter has since confirmed this rumor. This indicates to us that the second name, for the role of McGonagall, that came from the same source is just as accurate.
We can report here at Feature First that Academy Award nominated actress Janet McTeer is being eyed to portray Professor Minerva McGonagall in HBO’s Harry Potter.
Professor McGonagall, the deputy headmistress of Hogwarts, plays a key role in every book in the series. The character was originally played by Dame Maggie Smith, who sadly passed away earlier this year, in the previous beloved film adaptations of the books written by J.K Rowling, and later played by Fiona Glascott in the Fantastic Beasts prequel films.
McTeer is best known for her role as Helen Pierce in Chris Mundy’s Ozark and Alisa Jones in Marvel’s Jessica Jones. She will next be seen in an undisclosed role in Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s blockbuster franchise ender Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which is due out Summer 2025.
HBO’s Harry Potter also received another update yesterday during a media conference where it was revealed that the series would take 10 years to complete, with the first season expected to arrive in 2027. A year later than the previously expected 2026 date.
The series is currently being written by Francesca Gardiner with Mark Mylod currently tapped to direct. The duo previously worked on Succession.
