‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 1 Ending Explained

Now that Welcome to Derry’s first season has finished airing, here is everything you need to know about the ending

IT: Welcome to Derry season 1 has finally ended after eight long episodes, and now the audience are left with a cliffhanger of an ending that ties directly into the events of IT Chapter One.

How Does ‘IT: Welcome To Derry’ Season 1 End?

After the Losers and the adults of Derry trap Pennywise within the town using the dagger, banishing him for a further 27 years, the children deal with the aftermath. Marge reveals to Lilly that Pennywise informed her that Marge’s future child, Richie (played by Finn Wolfhard and Bill Hader in the IT movies), will be one of the people to kill Pennywise, which is why the clown was targeting her. Marge proposes the idea that Pennywise might not adhere to the rules of time like a normal creature and might move back in time to kill their ancestors.

This could hint that the following seasons (or chapters, as the show has dubbed them) of IT: Welcome to Derry could take place in cycles before this season and the IT movies, making it a reverse chronology. This has been known, as Andy Muschietti has previously spoken about setting the series in 1962, 1935, and 1908. Parts of the show have already taken place in 1908, particularly the origin of Pennywise’s current look with the entity consuming a real clown’s identity.

A fellow patient, Ingrid, daughter of the original Pennywise clown, who is driven insane after seeing the Deadlights in episode 7, sees this and states to Beverly “Oh dear, don’t be sad. You know what they say about Derry? No one who dies here ever really dies…”
