‘Hytale’ Back In Development & New Details
The previously cancelled survival sandbox game is back in development after being acquired from Riot Games.
Hytale, first announced back in early 2015, is a survival sandbox developed by the minds behind the Hypixel Minecraft server. The idea for the game came about in response to changes to the Minecraft EULA, which prevented servers from having micro-transactions which affected gameplay. The game was first funded by revenue generated from the Hypixel server until Hypixel Studios was purchased by Riot Games in April 2020. Now, Hytale is back in development and set to release in the near future.
A trailer was shown for the game in 2018 with an intended release year of 2021 however as the game grew in scope, multiple delays followed. After a decade of development, Hytale was cancelled by Riot Games on June 23rd, 2025 due to the game’s ambitious nature. All hope was not lost as two months later, Hytale and Hypixel Studios’ original founder, Simon Collins-Laflamme announced that he was in talks to acquire the game from Riot Games.
Finally at the start of this week, Simon went to Twitter / X to announce that negotiations were successful and Hytale was reacquired. The game’s official website went live once more with a new article titled “Hytale Is Saved!” Which we’ll be discussing today.
What’s New With Hytale?

Starting things off, over 30 former developers (with more on the way) have returned to continue work on this passion project with Hypixel Studios Co-founders Simon and Philippe funding the project for the next decade. In terms of a roadmap, they intend to keep it simple, avoiding promises they can’t keep. The living world, modding, core mechanics, and sandbox are their top priorities with the Adventure and Minigame modes coming much later.
The game will be launched into Early Access exclusively for PC so expect bugs and other mishaps to occur, the “Legacy Engine,” which they have the game built will be used, with support for cross-platform being added later on. Official Minigames will not be in early access however, players will be able to create their own minigames, custom servers and experiences.
Modding will be available at the launch of early access. Players can make mods for almost everything in the game and the relevant tools/guides will be made available from the get-go. They can also create custom servers, maps, and adventures.
Finally they once again iterate that the game will be buggy and recommend that once the early access goes live, players give feedback. As time goes on, announcements regarding the state of the game will be posted in the game’s social media accounts, including X, Instagram, Reddit, and their Discord server.
