A Supergirl solo film was first announced by James Gunn as an upcoming entry in the DC Universe (DCU) slate on January 31st, 2023 in a video titled “DC Studios Announcement – Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters | DC”. The film was announced to adapt the Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow comic run which is told from the perspective of a character named Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl who wants justice for her father who died at the hands of Krem of the Yellow Hills. Despite Kara not wanting to get involved, she eventually comes around to assist Ruthye’s goal when Krem shoots Krypto with a poisonous arrow. The trio then set off to find Krem and the cure before it’s too late.

Craig Gillespie directs the feature film with Ana Nogueira penning the script. Like the casting for Superman, there were four runner ups for Supergirl in January 2024 which included Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, Cailee Spaeny, and Meg Donnelly, ultimately Milly Alcock was chosen for the role later that month. September of that year saw Matthias Schoenaerts cast as the main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley was cast as Ruthye Marye Knoll the following month. Finally, Jason Momoa is set to play alien bounty hunter Lobo in the film.

The solo film isn’t the first appearance of the character as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl was first introduced at the end of July’s Superman where she arrived in the Fortress of Solitude to pick up the mischievous Krypto who Clark was babysitting throughout the film. Supergirl also made a brief appearance alongside Superman and the Justice Gang during the retconned Peacemaker Season 1 finale shown during a recap segment in Season 2, Episode 1 “The Ties That Grind”.

Earlier this week on December 7th, a promo was released featuring Milly Alcock’s Supergirl sitting on a bench as a spaceship arrives, the words “The Wait Is Finally Over” appearing on screen indicating the teaser trailer is on the horizon. Jumping forward a few days later on December 10th, a countdown for something related to DC Studios appeared in Times Square, once it concluded we got a new poster for the upcoming film, a new promo that showed snippets from the upcoming teaser trailer and finally a YouTube premiere for the teaser which is set to release on December 11th at 8:59 AM PT / 11:59 AM ET. You can view the trailer below:

The poster which we mentioned earlier shows Supergirl wearing Sunglasses and a jacket while floating behind a spray painted House of El Crest. A caption is included that says “Truth. Justice. Whatever” which is a play on Superman’s “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow” and shows Kara’s more carefree nature. You can view the poster below:
