Family Guy’s 25th Anniversary Special and this year’s Halloween Special, Family Guy: Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Cheater, feels mostly watered-down, but still has some great jokes throughout.
As part of this year’s Huluween celebrations, Disney+ and Hulu have joined together to release a new special for Family Guy, which plays out exactly like a standard episode of the hit adult sitcom. The episode, titled “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Cheater”, follows Joe (Patrick Warburton) and his giant pumpkin that he grew for a local pumpkin growing competition. Peter, Quagmire (both played by Seth MacFarlane), and Cleveland (Mike Henry) accidentally destroy the vegetable and thus hatch a plan to cheat the contest.
The episode features a noticeable lack of cutaway gags, something that many people criticize the show for, but it’s also something that defines Family Guy’s identity. Between some watered-down humour and this noticeable change in comedic style, the episode does miss a fair bit with its humour.
That being said, I did enjoy plenty of the gags, particularly a Humpty Dumpty bit between the Quahog Boys. The addition of special guest star Glen Powell also can’t hurt at all. The Top Gun: Maverick star plays a judge of Joe’s pumpkin competition and isn’t in the episode too much. For what material he has though, he is a delight, and while his design is a bit cooky looking, it’s not bad.
But as I alluded to before, this special’s biggest problem is its lack of specialness. Feeling completely the same as a standard Family Guy episode, bar the obvious seasonal difference. For such a monumental anniversary, one has to wonder if Disney is half-assing this fan favourite series.
Family Guy: Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Cheater stars Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Seth Green, Patrick Warburton, Mike Henry, and Glen Powell. The special is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
