Este Haim Would Love To Work With Paul Thomas Anderson Again, Proud Of Sister Alana In ‘One Battle After Another’
Este Haim is here at the Berlinale for her British indie film Sunny Dancer, but made it clear she is eager to collaborate with PTA again.
Previously starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film Licorice Pizza, singer Este Haim expressed huge admiration towards her “older brother” PTA. Even offering to compose his future film projects should composer Jonny Greenwood retire anytime. Este Haim is here at the Berlinale for her British indie film Sunny Dancer, but made it clear she is eager to collaborate with PTA again, the current Oscar favourite with One Battle After Another. PTA knows the Haim sisters very well, having directed over 10 of the Haim sisters’ music videos and their 2017 short film Valentine (even casting Alana Haim as the lead in Licorize Pizza with Danielle, Este and their mother Donna, who taught PTA in school).
I spoke with Este Haim about her previous experiences working with PTA for their HAIM Valentine short film that released 9 years ago, how it compared to working with director George Jacques for Sunny Dancer and how she feels about her sister Alana Haim working on One Battle After Another.
Zak Ahmed: It’s been nine years since the Haim Valentine short with Paul Thomas Anderson. How was it like working on that film compared to Sunny Dancer? Would you like to work with him again soon?
Este Haim: With Paul Thomas Anderson? Yes. I would love to. Sorry, George.
George Jacques: I’ll let it go. I think he’s pretty special, too. I’d like to work with him.
Este: No, I think Paul is, I’m lucky enough to say that Paul is… I can call Paul by his first name. I call him P sometimes. On a first letter basis. No, I think Paul is one of the greatest directors of not just our generation, but of all time. I feel very, very lucky that I’ve gotten to work with him on most of the music videos for HAIM and I sort of view him as kind of my older brother. Sorry, Paul, if that’s too much. And then George is like my little brother. So I’ve got two sisters, and I have two brothers as well. If Jonny Greenwood happens to want to retire, I will be right there for Paul whenever he would like.
As for her sister, Alana, working closely with PTA after Licorice Pizza and, more recently, One Battle After Another.
Este: My sister was amazing in One Battle After Another, and I’m so proud of her, and I’m so proud of both of my sisters, and you know I’m so excited to see what Alana does in the future.
