Erik Messerschmidt Boards ‘The Batman – Part II’ As The Director Of Photography
Following Greig Fraser’s departure from the sequel to The Batman and the search for a new DP which has been going on, Erik Messerschmidt has officially hopped on board as DP.
Early on this year, the new broke that Greig Fraser would not be returning for Dune: Part Three despite him helming the first two installments of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, and this was due to alleged scheduling conflicts with The Batman – Part II, as he had reportedly wanted to focus on the latter instead. Funny enough, the production for The Batman – Part II was delayed regardless and he’s had further scheduling conflicts regarding Matt Reeves’ sequel to The Batman and Sam Mendes’ four upcoming The Beatles biopics.
With Fraser sticking to the latter and departing from The Batman – Part II, there has been a search for a new director of photography to helm the sequel. Earlier today we heard from industry insider, Jeff Sneider, that Academy Award winner Erik Messerschmidt has been tapped as the director of photography on the film, which was confirmed by Matt Reeves himself shortly thereafter on X.
Messerschmidt is known for shooting the latest bunch of David Fincher’s projects such as Mindhunter, Mank (which he had won the Best Cinematography Oscar for), The Killer and The Adventures of Cliff Booth which is set to release next year. The latter will be wrapping production by next month, with production on The Batman – Part II set to begin only a couple months later. Messerschmidt has also finished production on Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars earlier this year.
This is the first major update on The Batman – Part II in months, signaling that we should expect casting news soon. Now would be a good time to turn notifications on for Matt Reeves’ account on Twitter / X because he’ll surely begin posting his casting announcement gifs soon.
The Batman – Part II, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, releases in theaters on October 1st, 2027.
