In a new interview, Elisabeth Moss gives an update on the highly anticipated The Invisible Man 2.
Why Is It Such A Big Thing?
Despite being one of the last releases before the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the globe, the first Invisible Man film was a major box office success grossing approximately $143 million worldwide on a budget of $7 million. While a sequel still hasn’t been publicly greenlit, there have been some developments regarding the film.
The Invisible Man, itself a reimagining of the iconic Universal Monsters film, follows Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) as she escapes her abusive partner (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), only to find out something invisible is stalking her. A premise that allows itself to dive deep into the issues of abuse and residual trauma.
This is why the idea is so intriguing to fans because following something up that ended with a character coming to terms with her abuse can be tough. However, with Leigh Whannell, veteran horror filmmaker and co-creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises at the helm, the sequel has a fair chance given his experience with similar subject matter.
Why Now?
Following the COVID-19 pandemic and last year’s SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes, there is no reason for immediate development on the sequel to not go forward. And it seems the creatives agree, as Moss confirms in an interview with Joshua Horrowitz of Happy Sad Confused.
In the conversation linked above, Moss says she and Whannell are nearing a breakthrough regarding The Invisible Man 2.
”We are, I would say — and by we, I mean Blumhouse and my production company — we are closer than we have ever been to cracking it. And I feel very good about it. We are very much intent on continuing that story, for sure.”
Although it isn’t specifically said what they were cracking, we can infer that Moss meant the story, due to the fact that scripts typically aren’t written until the film is greenlit. Horowitz also questions Moss’ involvement in Leigh Whannell’s next film, which is also based on a Universal Monsters property, Wolf Man.
The Future Of The Dark Universe
In her response to Horowitz’s query if she was in Wolf Man, she replied “I wish” but also gives a couple pieces of interesting additional information.
”I think that’s the idea for Universal in the future, if we can… you know Wolf Man goes well and all that — but is to kind of revive that universe.
“If we can get this sequel happening then maybe we can get a universe started… We’ll see.”
Not many people know that The Invisible Man was originally intended to be a part of Universal’s Dark Universe, but following the failure of 2017’s The Mummy, all plans were thrown out. It seems Moss is hinting that Universal still are interested in reviving the universe with Wolf Man and other monster films on the horizon.
Moss next appears in the FX series The Veil while Whannell is currently filming Wolf Man. Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger and Matilda Firth and is currently scheduled to release in 2025, five years after the release of The Invisible Man.
