‘Doctor Who’ Season 2 Teaser Trailer Breakdown
The 24-second teaser opens up with the Doctor in his tardis as his surroundings begin to warp around him as we hear him say, “There are forces beyond this universe; it’s all a game to them.” Since Russell T. Davies returned as Showrunner, we’ve had to deal with several figures from the Pantheon of Discord. First we were reintroduced to the Toymaker back in “The Giggle,” then we were met with his child, Maestro, in “The Devil’s Chord,” and finally, we met the mother and father of them all, Sutekh, the god of death, in “The Legend of Ruby Sunday.” It’s likely that the Doctor is still dealing with these gods, and there’s another scene in the teaser trailer that might support this.
The next scene shows a planet that resembles Skarro a lot from its buildings and orange-torn skies, but it could also be a possibility that this is a new planet we’re visiting as we’ve yet to return to an old place with this Doctor.
We’re then met with the first look at Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu. She may seem familiar, and that’s because she has already appeared in Doctor Who as a different character. Varada first made her appearance in Season 1, Episode 3, “Boom,” where she played a character called Mundy Flynn and was seen on a planet called Kastarion 3. This is clearly a different character, but there is something clearly going on that we’re yet to understand. She’s seen looking out a window through some blinds in what seems to be the same place as this planet, with the same orange hue hitting her face.
A returning face is the mysterious antagonist, Mrs. Flood, with Anita Dobson returning in the role. She’s wearing a new outfit compared to what we last saw her in, so it’s hard to tell if she’s keeping up the appearance of dressing like previous companions, but from this scene, it appears that she’s in a theatre, as she’s seen using a pair of theatre binoculars. This might also be the same scene that we get to see later in the teaser trailer, which will also possibly hint at the return of the Pantheon.
We get glimpses of what look to be two different episodes, one where there seems to be a robot invasion with these huge red-armoured Baymax-looking robots. Two of them seem to be surrounding Belinda as they begin to take her somewhere, and she seems to be in the same outfit we see her in later on when she appears on the Tardis. The second shot shows the Doctor and Belinda in these black suits dropping from a ship onto a planet with a bunch of other people who are wearing similar attire.
Belinda then says to the Doctor, “You need to get me home,” with him replying, This might be the long way round.” From the synopsis of this season, it seems like we’re going to be getting a more serialised season compared to the last one with the Doctor spending the whole season trying to get Belinda back home. We also know from a clip that was released from the first episode that the Doctor is clearly looking for her and that she works in a hospital, similar to Martha Jones, a previous companion who also had their actor appear in the prior season as a completely different character. Russell T Davies could be playing around with these comparisons, but it’s likely Belinda’s connection might be more similar to what we saw with Clara.
The Doctor then proceeds to say, “But the games are deadly,” likely continuing his monologue from the start of the teaser trailer, forming the complete sentence, “There are forces beyond this universe; it’s all a game to them, but the games are deadly.” We then get a shot of UNIT, where we see the return of Kate Lethridge-Stewart, Shirley, and Ruby, who now seem to be working for them. It’s unclear what they’re staring at, but considering the last two times we visited the place, something unpleasant is bringing them together.
We finally come around to that shot of the theatre where we see a literal cartoon character pulling himself out of the screen. This is unlike anything we’ve seen in Doctor Who, and the only possible reasoning behind this is that we’re dealing with another god. There have been theories going around that Mrs. Flood is the god of stories, but I highly doubt that we’re getting her this involved unless this is an episode saved for the finale, but I don’t believe there are any shots from the finale in this trailer.
The next few shots are very rapid, and it’s quite hard to tell what’s going on, and the Doctor even seems as confused as us as he screams, “What the hell is this?” We see the Doctor inside what looks to be a 50s-themed room; it’s hard to decipher what’s going on, but there seems to be an anti-mavity room outside of it. We also see the Doctor in an anti-mavity room in this same quick montage, but he’s in a completely different outfit. There appear to be mirages of Belinda in one scene, which might have to do with the distortion we’ve been seeing on the Tardis, and finally we also see those red robots again, but this time pushing the Tardis on what appears to be a space station.
From the looks of it, a lot of the teaser trailer seems to be showcasing the first episode while also giving us a quick tease at maybe the first half of the season, but I think it’s safe to say that 70% of this trailer was from that first episode. I also believe that the distortion that we’re seeing take place on the Tardis has to do with Belinda herself, which is why the Doctor is looking for her, and this may possibly have to do with her other half, Mundy Flynn.
It’s a short trailer, but from all of that, we can tell that Season 2 of Doctor Who is going to be a lot darker than the first season, more action-packed, and it’s going to have more focus on the storyline that involves Belinda compared to Ruby’s storyline, which is something we need after how that ended. As a fan of Doctor Who, it’s safe to say that Russell T. Davie needs this season to be good for Disney to continue having an interest in the show, but so far, it’s looking like we’re in for a ride of a lifetime.
