Cruella 2 Officially Back In Development
Cruella 2, the sequel to Cruella starring Emma Stone, first had a sequel announced in 2021, but nothing came of it. It looks like it’s finally back in development.
Cruella, starring Emma Stone, was released all the way back in 2021. After which, a sequel was announced relatively quickly. However, there has been radio silence since. It looks like it’s officially back in development, according to insider DanielRPK.
Cruella is a film set in 1970s England that follows Estella Miller’s (Emma Stone) ascent in the fashion world. It’s her origin story of becoming the iconic villain, Cruella De Vil.
For those unfamiliar, Cruella De Vil is a villain of The Hundred and One Dalmatians story. She first appeared in a book of the same name (1956), which was then adapted by Walt Disney Productions as One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961). In both of those stories, she kidnaps Dalmatians in order to turn them into fur coats.
Glenn Close played the character in the prior live-action adaptation. Emma Stone’s iteration of Cruella is a prequel and the first time for Cruella as a lead in live action. It sounds like that will continue on in the sequel. It’s unclear if the sequel is set before A Hundred and One Dalmations or even touches on the events in the book from Cruella’s perspective.
Cruella was directed by Craig Gillespie, who, last we heard, was set to return for the sequel. As is writer Tony McNamara. They were announced to return for the sequel back in 2021, along with Emma Stone.
Craig is coming off DC’s Supergirl and as of right now, has nothing officially lined up. Emma Stone, who has kept herself as busy as she possibly can the last few years, also doesn’t have anything in line after Bugonia. There’s a chance this could be the next film for both, depending on how quickly everything can come together.
This would be Disney’s first sequel for a live-action adaptation since Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which, funny enough, is another Disney villain in a lead role.
Cruella was released during the pandemic with a unique simultaneous release where it was released in both theaters and Disney+ but only on Premier Access to buy for $30. The film made $233.5M theatrically. We don’t have official figures for Premier Access but it’s very likely the film turned a profit on its $100M budget, with all avenues of revenue, which is why a sequel makes sense.
