Colin Farrell Eyed for DC Studios’ ‘Sgt. Rock’
After the departure of Daniel Craig, it has been reported that Colin Farrell is the top choice to play Sgt Rock in the DC Studios movie.
As first reported by DEADLINE, Colin Farrell is in final talks to take on the titular role of Sgt. Rock in a movie of the same name. The picture is set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and was going to be his next collaboration with Daniel Craig, before he backed out of the movie. With a replacement found this quickly, the movie is still on track to be filmed this summer and is aiming for a fast 2026 release.
Unlike the usual capes-and-powers spectacle, Sgt. Rock is a gritty war story centred on a tough-as-nails soldier leading Easy Company through the horrors of World War II. This kind of grounded, character-driven storytelling could add serious variety to DC’s lineup and prove that the studio is willing to take risks with more mature, genre-focused films.
Of course, Luca Guadagnino being involved as a director only brings more faith to the project and vision, as he must have been engaged by James Gunn’s pitch to join DC Studios if he chose this over one of his many other indie projects in the works.
Known for his meticulous craftsmanship and ability to explore deep psychological and emotional themes (Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All), he would bring a unique sensibility to Sgt. Rock, balancing visceral war action with a more introspective look at trauma and treat it as more of a character study. If handled right, this could be DC’s answer to 1917, setting itself apart from the usual comic book fare while still staying true to the character’s roots.

The script has been written by Justin Kuritzkes, who also worked with Guadagnino on Challengers and Queer.
Whilst he is in final talks, Farrell’s involvement brings some doubt as to whether the project will be made so soon. While they could get it done this summer, Farrell has two big movies coming out in the Fall of this year that are aiming for big awards season pushes, which is expected to take up his schedule in the second half of the year.
They also have the issue that Farrell isn’t much of a box office draw, so if they’re aiming to make a big money-making hit, they may be wanting to reconsider the lead.
What this also means for the future of DC Studios movies is that actors can seemingly play multiple roles at once, with Farrell also famously playing The Penguin in The Batman and a self-titled Max Original Series.
