‘Coco 2’ Officially In Development From Pixar

During a Disney investors call earlier today, development was announced on the next Pixar sequel film, ‘Coco 2’.

After a string of failures on original animated projects during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic, Pixar was forced to shift strategies and began prioritizing sequels to their classic hits. This new initiative proved to be successful after last year’s Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing film of 2024 at nearly 1.7 billion dollars. Shortly thereafter, at D23 in August, fans got a look at some new concept art for Toy Story 5, and while on stage during the same panel, it was announced that Incredibles 3 was in production.

Now the next film to get the sequel treatment is 2017’s Coco.

Coco 2 was confirmed to be in development earlier this morning during a Disney investors call. CEO Bob Iger stated that “the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon.”

The original film follows a young Mexican boy named Miguel, who goes on an adventure to the underworld during Dia de Los Muertos and discovers dark secrets about his family and attempts to reconnect with his elderly great-grandmother, Coco, who suffers from memory issues in her old age. Making $814M at the worldwide box office back in 2017, Coco ranked as the 11th highest-grossing film that year.

Plot details are currently unknown for Coco 2, but directors of the original film, Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, will be returning to helm this sequel.

Coco 2 is currently slated for a 2029 release. Alongside the announcement, the first logo was also revealed.
