Bong Joon-ho has debuted a first look at ‘Ally’, his first ever animated feature. Read more about the Bong Joon-ho ‘Ally’ first look inside.
Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho has debuted the first look at his next film following the commercial failure of 2025’s Mickey 17.
Best known for his Academy Award-winning film Parasite, Bong Joon-ho is currently the most famed director out of Korea, known for his works involving class commentary, great visuals, and visionary direction. Now, his next film is nearing release.
Titled Ally, the film serves as his first ever foray into the animation space, and follows a piglet squid on a special journey. Read the lengthy synopsis provided for the film below:
At the heart of the story lies Ally, a curious and endearing piglet squid living in the uncharted depths of the South Pacific Ocean. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary. But when a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, her peaceful world is suddenly thrown into danger. Alongside her colorful and loyal — yet unlikely — companions, Ally is thrust into an extraordinary journey that will take her all the way to the surface. Inspired by remarkable real-life marine creatures, the film explores themes of friendship and courage, as encounters between humans and the creatures of the deep reshape both worlds. Set against visually stunning underwater worlds and epic action sequences, the film is a family adventure blending humor and emotion.

Werner Herzog was previously revealed to have been cast in the film, and the film will seemingly feature a combination of Korean and English languages, not unlike films such as Okja and Snowpiercer, both of which were directed by Joon-ho.
The film reportedly has a budget of $60M dollars, making it the most expensive Korean film of all time, and is reportedly aiming for a 2027 theatrical release with distribution being shopped at Cannes next month.
Legendary director/composer John Carpenter (Halloween) was also confirmed to compose the score for Bong’s next film, though it is unknown whether that will be for Ally, or another work (namely a horror film) that is yet to enter production.
