Alien first graced the cinema screen back in 1979 and now, 45 years later it is receiving its eighth continuation in the form of August’s Alien: Romulus. In celebration of this release and the film’s 45th anniversary, the folks at Disney have decided to re-release the original Ridley Scott-helmed film for audiences to see on the big screen again.

Fede Álvarez and Sir Ridley Scott recently sat down for Fandango in promotion for the Alien re-release, specifically the iconic chest-burster scene in the original 1979 classic. In the clip, Scott retells a story of an interaction with critically acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick and his curiosity about how the scene was pulled off.

We can exclusively report that this will be played in theatres during the re-release edition but may be extended due to the added runtime being approximately 9 minutes long. The interview, published on Fandango’s social media accounts, only has a runtime of 150 seconds (2.5 minutes), so presumably something else will fill these gaps. Additionally, it seems this new footage is intended to play at the start of the film, being labelled as an intro.

We can speculate as to what else is included but we have a sneaking suspicion that it may be a new look at Alien: Romulus, which is due to be in theatres August 16, 2024. The film follows (as per 20th Century Studios) “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” Similar enough to the ‘79 film but also different enough to feel refreshing, as shown in the first teaser for the film, which you can watch below.

Alien returns to theatres for its 45th anniversary on Alien Day, April 26th 2024 and is directed by Sir Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Martian) and stars Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt and Ian Holm. The franchise will return for its 9th instalment on August 16th, 2024. It is directed by Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Dont Breathe) and stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War, Priscilla), Archie Renaux and Isabel Merced.
