Today we review and recap Agatha All Along Episode 7 and predict what we can expect next for the series.
‘Agatha All Along’ Episode 7: A Time Travelling Masterpiece
Episode 7 quickly became a favorite of mine, the costumes for the wind trial were an absolute blast. Seeing Lilia (Patti LuPone) as Glinda The Good, Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) as the Evil Queen, Agatha as the Wicked Witch, and Billy as Maleficent brought a huge smile to my face. The trial also caught my attention as it dealt with tarot cards and readings. I don’t have much experience with the concept aside from the little experience I’ve had with it in Cyberpunk: 2077 but regardless I was excited to learn the meanings behind the cards used in this episode.
This episode gave a special focus to Lilia Calderu, the divination witch. Seeing her relationship grow with Jennifer was an absolute blast because it not only shows how Lilia has changed throughout the journey but also Jen as she loses the selfish attitude that we’ve experienced in the prior episodes.
I will admit that the episode became a bit hard to follow at certain times due to the episode being, as Lilia puts it, “out of sequence,” though I appreciate the structure of it in order to make viewers experience the confusing life that Lilia has endured throughout the journey. However, the payoff made this episode all the more satisfying. From the linking of dialogue to the moment when Lilia realises that she must do a tarot reading for herself to complete the trial, we get to experience how amazing and powerful Lilia truly is. This episode gave me everything I needed to know about Lilia and gave her a fitting conclusion which didn’t feel wrong or unjust like Alice’s death.
What Happens In Episode 7?
The episode opens with a closeup of Lilia who’s seen falling into an abyss. We then cut to Billy and Agatha making their way to the Wind Trial. Billy asks Agatha a few questions. However Agatha’s responses are not clear, “if you want straight answers, ask a straight lady” as she says. Billy’s hatred and doubt for Agatha grows as he begins to wonder if she’s ever walked the road at all. They arrive at the Wind trial and Agatha becomes the Wicked Witch while Billy becomes Maleficent. The trial involves a tarot reading and as soon as Billy picks up the cards the timer begins.
As Billy reads for Agatha he sounds very confused and once he places down the card a sword falls from the ceiling. A second card is placed and another sword falls. Agatha doesn’t believe in tarot and begins placing cards randomly which causes more swords to fall. The ceiling then begins to lower. Billy says, “I wish Lilia was here” and we cut to Lilia and Jennifer below the road. As Lilia asks what’s happening Jennifer reveals that Lilia has already told her everything from where the tunnel leads to the identity of Teen. They continue down the tunnel and we begin to see how Lilia’s powers work.
In the tunnel Jennifer mentions that Lilia is being wispy or kooky. As Lilia answers Jennifer we then return to Episode 4 where Lilia is asking Alice “Which is it, am I wispy or am I kooky?” Lilia then says “Alice, Alice don’t” which then cuts to Episode 3 to finish the sentence “Alice, Alice don’t try to save Agatha.” These flashbacks reveal how Lilia has been experiencing the random divinations from her perspective.
We then cut to a young Lilia with her teacher. Older Lilia appears and she reveals it’s been centuries. Her teacher then states it’s her first lesson. When Lilia looks into the cup of tea leaves we return to the tunnel. Lilia reveals to Jennifer that she lives her life out of sequence. She experiences gaps that have been becoming uncontrollable which she suspects is a result of her coming to the end though it’s unclear what that means.
Lilia then jumps to her future self at the Wind trial as Agatha saves her from a falling sword. Lilia approaches Billy and pushes him to the wall telling him that they are not cool. Billy apologizes for what he did in Episode 5 andhe reads her mind answering all her questions. Now that the sigil is broken Lilia is able to remember meeting Billy for the first time at the bar mitzvah. Lilia realises that she was doing a tarot reading for Billy. Billy asks Lilia if she cast the sigil on him. She says yes and reveals that she saw that something would happen to William that night which would change him. More swords begin to fall and Lilia questions what she did wrong.
We cut back to Episode 5 and Episode 2, before going back to Lilia’s teacher. Her teacher says her task is “not to control, but to see,” we then cut back to below the road. Lilia finds Billy’s spell book and she tells Jen that she forced the gaps to go away because she saw death. The two hear Agatha and Billy’s voices and they locate the shelving that leads to the trial and they enter.
Lilia begins reading for Billy and he asks whether he’s William Kaplan or Billy Maximoff. The ceiling stops lowering and Lilia begins the read. Billy chooses his first card and as Lilia places it a sword falls again. A sword begins to drop where Lilia is sitting and Agatha pushes her away cutting to Episode 2 where Lilia shouts “Get off me,” then Episode 4 where she says “We really hated each other from the beginning, but now…” followed by Episode 3 where she says “I love you guys.”
Back to Lilia’s teacher, she asks Lilia why she’s on this journey. Lilia makes excuses and her teacher denies them. She asks, “what will you do with your remaining time?” and we cut back to the underground tunnel where Lilia reveals the same information that Jen talked about. The shelving, the identity of Teen and the type of trial. We see a tunnel and a train, a reference to the Westview Metro system that Sharon Davis brought up in Episode 3. They hear the Salem Seven approaching and hide behind some crates. As Jen joins Lilia on the path towards the Wind Trial, Lilia realises what she did wrong.
We cut back to the trial and Lilia begins a tarot reading for herself. She declares herself the Queen of Cups, she asks “what’s missing?” We cut to Episode 2 where she says Three of Pentacles. “The Path Behind..” We cut to episode 5 where she says The Knight of Wands, representing Alice. “The Path Ahead…” we cut to episode 2 where she calls Jennifer the High Priestess. “Obstacles..” we cut to episode 4 where she says “Three of Swords” representing Agatha. “The Windfall…” we cut to episode 6 where she says The Tower Reversed when reading William’s palm. “The Destination…”
We cut back to the underground where Lilia and Jen first fell after Billy launched them off the road. We hear a mysterious voice say “Don’t you recognise me Lilia?” and cut to various scenes of Rio until she says “In the end, all roads lead to me,” and it’s revealed that Rio Vidal is Death. Agatha places the Death card and the trial is complete, the exit opens revealing that the next trial is Earth.
Lilia repeats that Rio is Death, the original green witch, for the members of the coven. Agatha confirms this after Billy asks her. Lilia tells everyone to get to the exit. Lilia gives Agatha her last divination, “When she calls you a coward, hit the deck.”She then gives Billy his spellbook and reminds Jennifer that she’s the path ahead before shutting the exit and staying behind.
The Salem Seven enter the trial and Lilia faces off against them. She turns the tower card over causing everything to turn upside down. The Salem Seven are all killed by falling onto the swords and Lilia lets go of the table also falling to her demise. The final scene of the episode sees a young Lilia ready to begin her first lesson with her teacher.
Predicting Where We Are Heading Next
With the remaining footage from trailers, tv spots, featurettes and using what we know from the latest episode, we can determine that the earth trial is up next. I predict that we will open with a flashback to Agatha’s first meeting with Rio and how the two developed feelings for each other. With regards to the earth trial, we know that Agatha, Billy and Jennifer will be present at the trial. Perhaps Rio and the others get into a fight causing her to not participate in the trial leaving the others to somehow fill the role of the Green Witch. It’s possible that Billy will have to take on the role of the Green witch seeing as Agatha and Jennifer have no experience in that field.
Besides locating Tommy, another challenge that Billy faces is his lost memories; he only remembers the last 3 years of his life. I can see this trial serving as a way for him to regain his memories and ultimately end up with him powering up as Wiccan at some point during the episode.
We also see Agatha regaining her powers at some point during a fight with Rio Vidal. There are hints of lightning effects leading me to believe that Billy may give up some (if not all) of his power to create a turning point in the fight ending with him dying.
Agatha could then use her wish to bring Billy back as a sort of redemption for her previous crimes of trading Nicholas Scratch for the Darkhold. With Billy now revived, he may also be able to make his wish of finding Tommy. Perhaps Billy and Agatha will be on good terms once more and the two will work to locate Tommy.
There has long been talk of Agatha’s first attempt at the road where she and one other witch survived. I suspect episode 9 will dive into this with perhaps the promise of the road and a person’s greatest wish being a ploy. We’ve seen Agatha in outfits from different time periods and I think that will come into play in this final episode.
Another point of discussion that has been brought up a lot was Agatha trading her son for the Darkhold. I think we’ll witness that moment and finally see the live action debut of Mephisto. There was an old rumor surrounding a Mephisto special presentation being filmed on the set of Agatha All Along; perhaps elements of that special were merged into episode 9.
Agatha All Along stars Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Joe Locke as Billy Maximoff, Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal, Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, and more. The first seven episodes are now available on Disney+, with the two episode finale arriving on October 30th at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET.
