A fifth Hunger Games novel is in the works and is titled Sunrise on the Reaping. Find out what this may mean for the film franchise below.
In a new press release from Scholastic, it was announced that a fifth Hunger Games novel was in development. The story will follow the fiftieth Hunger Games, the second Quarter Quell, which sets it a mere 24 years before the original Hunger Games book and 40 years after the events of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The book will be titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and according to author Suzanne Collins, will be inspired by Scottish Enlightenment philosopher David Hume. She went on to describe her influences:
“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’ The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
We may also have a general idea of the plot of the novel, having been granted the fact that Haymitch Abernathy, the second victor of District 12 won the 50th Hunger Games. This means that although there is a chance the character won’t be the focus of this next novel, he will be involved at least in some way.
There is hope for a film adaptation of the novel too, with the prior prequel novel in the series being commissioned by Lionsgate specifically for a film adaptation. This could possibly be the reasoning behind the development for this one too, acting as a prequel to Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch from the film versions of the novels.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to release on March 18th, 2025. It is written by Suzanne Collins with Scholastic holding the English rights to the novel.
