Adam Sandler is set to return to one of his most iconic roles as production on Happy Gilmore 2 has begun ramping up with a director now attached to the project.
Over 28 years ago, Dennis Dugan’s Happy Gilmore was released to critical and commercial acclaim. The film follows failed ice hockey player Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) as he finds success in golf. There, he comes to face hot shot golfer Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) and to topple him and save his mother’s house, he teams up with Chubbs (Carl Weathers).
A new report from Kasey Moore of What’s On Netflix suggests that the long-awaited sequel to Happy Gilmore is due to begin production in late 2024. Shooting will begin on September 5th, 2024 and will reportedly wrap on November 18th, 2024. Shooting will occur in New Jersey, USA, a stark contrast to the filming of the first film which occurred in Vancouver, Canada.
We also have confirmation from What’s On Netflix for the director and writing team of the film. Directing the film is Netflix alum Kyle Newacheck. Newacheck previously worked with Sandler on Murder Mystery, a film that broke viewership records for Netflix and made it at one point into Netflix’s all-time charts. He since went onto direct episodes of FX’s What We Do In The Shadows.
Returning to pen the script for the film is Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the latter of which has collaborated with Sandler over twenty times in the past. Currently attached to the film in an acting capacity is Adam Sandler, no word on whether Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen will reprise their respective roles as Shooter McGavin and Virginia Venit. The film is in pre-production at Netflix.
