‘Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three’ Review: A Messy Climax

The final film in the Crisis trilogy, Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three, has finally arrived and, with it, the end of the DC Tomorrowverse.

Following two disappointing entries in this three-parter, many DC fans were left disappointed after witnessing bold, clunky, and extremely messy filmmaking for roughly 3hrs. The reception left audiences relying on the last film of DC Animation’s Tomorrowverse to end this saga with a bang, paying off tens of films within its one-hour thirty-eight-minute runtime.

Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three picks up directly where Part Two left off, with Meg Donnelly’s Supergirl killing The Monitor and forcing all our heroes into the mystical, yet unstable, sub-dimension known as The Bleed. By doing so, the heroes and villains must work together to fix this and save countless lives.

On paper, it is one of the most high-stakes DC storylines out there but within its execution — not so much. The film lacks the depth and urgency within its characters to make this threat feel like a threat and is heavily predictable as a product of the film’s poor script by James Krieg.

It is a theme that continues throughout the film, never alleviating but still playing with some cool visuals and concepts. Perhaps my favourite of these concepts is the image of dinosaurs running through Metropolis being chased down by The Losers, or Jensen Ackles’ Batman engaging in combat with fear toxin-wielding Nazis.

Many fans will likely forgive the film for its misdeeds also due to a multiversal incorporation of Kevin Conroy’s (his final performance following his untimely death) Batman and Mark Hamill’s Joker. Hamill’s performance seems to emulate a performance by his younger self, and sadly it does not work in the slightest.

Ultimately, there is just too much going on in this film for it to be coherent or remotely good. For me, this can only be enjoyed by the performances, as well as its homages to past DC media. The Tomorrowverse finally goes out with a whimper and will largely become known for its misses rather than its hits.

Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three stars Jensen Ackles, Darren Criss, Aldis Hodge, Meg Donnelly, Stana Katic, Corey Stoll, Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamill. The film was directed by Jeff Wamester and written by James Krieg for DC and Warner Bros. Animation. It is now available to rent or purchase digitally.
