In a new interview, comedian Eddie Murphy commented on the progress of Shrek 5 and the Donkey spin-off movie.
During his press tour for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F film, Eddie Murphy was interviewed by Collider’s Steven Weintraub. In the interview, the SNL alumni was questioned regarding the progress of Dreamworks Animation’s Shrek 5 and its subsequent Donkey spin-off. His response is as follows:
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Back in April of 2023, Variety reported on the early development of both of these projects but updates have been few and far between since. Now, we have the confirmation that these projects are and have been moving forward. Murphy also teased a release window for the project, affirming its 2025 release.
Shrek first graced the big screen in 2001, taking the box office by storm and positioning itself to win many awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 2002 Oscars. The original film starred Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad and many more. Today, it is one of Universal and Dreamworks Animation’s biggest franchises and a staple of the animation medium.
Up next for Murphy is the fourth Beverly Hills Cop film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is directed by Mark Molloy. It stars Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon, and Taylour Paige. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will begin streaming on Netflix on July 3.
