Blumhouse Abandons ‘The Exorcist’ Trilogy, Officially Hires Mike Flanagan For New Film
As reported earlier in the year, talks with Blumhouse regarding The Exorcist: Deceiver and The Exorcist: Redeemer has progressed for better or for worse. They have now hired industry veteran Mike Flanagan to adapt a new vision on the iconic horror franchise.
The decision comes after the performance of the last Exorcist film, which underperformed critically and financially. The Exorcist: Believer was directed by David Gordon Green, a filmmaker best known for his successful reboot of the Halloween franchise. He was attached to direct at least two more Exorcist films before he left the project in early 2024.
Since then, many have been wondering whether the next two films would be moving forward at all. A question further fueled by reports of Mike Flanagan’s involvement, a director who tends to have an apt for creative control surrounding his projects.
Flanagan has now joined a new The Exorcist film, one that will not follow up The Exorcist: Believer but rather be its own thing. In a new statement, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum had this to say about the visionary director:
“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse, I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of ‘The Exorcist’ and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”
Flanagan is known for his adaptations of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game; as well as Netflix horror miniseries’ Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Haunting of Hill House. He had the following statement to say about joining the new film:
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”
Joining Flanagan on the film are producers Trevor Macy and John Scherer (on behalf of Intrepid Pictures). Flanagan himself will be producing under his Red Room Pictures banner. Flanagan will also write.
