Every ‘Star Fox’ Game On Nintendo Switch

So, you just finished watching The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and after witnessing Glen Powell’s performance as Fox McCloud and you’re interested in checking out the Starfox franchise. Well, you’ve come to the right place, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at every Starfox game (and honourable mentions) available on the Nintendo Switch family of systems and what you’ll need to play them.

‘Star Fox’ (1993)

Originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Star Fox is a rail shooter game developed by Nintendo in collaboration with Argonaut Software. The game follows Fox McCloud and his Star Fox team as they defend their homeworld of Corneria against the nefarious scientist Andross.

The game was added to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app on September 5th, 2019.

‘Star Fox 2’ (1995)

Like its predecessor, Star Fox 2 is a rail shooter game developed by Nintendo in collaboration with Argonaut Software. Picking up on the story of Star Fox, the sequel follows Fox McCloud and his crew as they continue the fight against Emperor Andross, who seeks to destroy the Lylat system. This title features semi-real-time gameplay, new ship types, new playable characters, and a more advanced 3D game engine however, the game was originally cancelled due to fear that its dated graphics would compare poorly against newer games.

Star Fox 2 would eventually be released in the Super NES Classic Edition lineup in 2017. The game was later added to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app on December 12th, 2019.

‘Star Fox 64’ (1997)

Star Fox 64 is a rail shooter game developed by Nintendo and serves as a reboot of the 1993 SNES title. The game also took some elements from the previously cancelled Star Fox 2 including All-Range Mode, Multi-Player Mode and the Star Wolf scenario. In this title, Fox McCloud and his crew must stop Andross’ plans of controlling the Lylat System but this mission won’t be easy as Andross has enlisted the help of the Star Wolf team, a band of mercenaries led by Wolf O’Donnell, who also happens to be Fox’s long-time rival.

The game was added to the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app on October 25th, 2021.

Honourable Mention: ‘Starlink: Battle For Atlas’

Starlink: Battle For Atlas is a third person action adventure game where players pilot spaceships to explore the Atlas system. The game is developed by Ubisoft and released on the Nintendo Switch on October 16th, 2018. Throughout the game, players can form alliances with different alien species, impacting the world around them and the gameplay. The game also featured a Toys to Life mechanic, where players can collect physical versions of the game’s ships and weapons and modify them.

The Nintendo Switch Starter Pack for Starlink: Battle For Atlas featured Fox McCloud and his Arwing Starship as figures. The Nintendo Switch version of the game also included a Star Fox crossover where Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad provide aid to the main Starlink characters while on their own mission to hunt down Wolf O’Donnell.

Honourable Mention: ‘Super Smash Brothers Ultimate’

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is the latest entry in the 2D Platform Fighter, the game is developed by Nintendo and released on the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018. The game features characters from across all Nintendo franchises alongside guest fighters such as Steve from Minecraft, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Joker from Persona 5 and more.

Fox McCloud appears in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate as a starter character, with Falco Lombardi and Wolf O’Donnell being unlockable characters. Andross and Krystal are also available as Assist Trophies. A Fox McCloud-themed Cap and Outfit is also available for the Mii Fighter. There are also three stages inspired by the games including Corneria, Venom and Lylat Cruise.
