Alexander Payne’s ‘Somewhere Out There’ Begins Filming In Denmark Q1 2026
Alexander Payne’s Somewhere Out There is set to begin production at the start of next year.
It’s been two long years since The Holdovers released to rave reviews. The film saw Paul Giamatti earn an Oscar nomination and instantly took status as a Christmas classic, but since then Alexander Payne has been taking time before shooting his next film. Now, Alexander Payne seems to be readying for his next film, Somewhere Out There, which just got a shooting date and a shooting location per a new production listing.
A new production listing reveals that Alexander Payne’s next film, Somewhere Out There, will begin filming in Denmark in the new year, specifically the first quarter of 2026. As first reported by ScreenDaily, Renate Reinsve will indeed star in the film, making it the fourth film that she currently has in development, following X, Fjord, and The Backrooms, the last of which is currently filming.
The film is set to be penned by Erlend Loe, in the Danish language, making it Payne’s first solo non-English language film and his second overall following his short from the Paris, je t’aime collection. As for Reinsve, she is no stranger to non-English language films, as she is a frequent collaborator of Joachim Trier as well as Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel.
Somewhere Out There is one of three Alexander Payne films in development. The others are a sequel to 1999’s Election, and the other is a Western set in the 19th century starring Paul Giamatti.
