After an early renewal several days before the release of the show’s second season, Prime Video’s hit TV series Reacher has presumably finished filming its third season, and we have confirmation regarding the series to share.
This article will contain spoilers for the first two seasons of Reacher.
Reacher follows the story of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson), a veteran military police major living as a drifter in the United States. The series’ first season follows Reacher investigating a local conspiracy involving lawmakers, politicians, and businessmen in the fictional US town of Margrave, Georgia.
Reacher must reconcile with his familial relationships and team up with Margrave’s trustworthy cops to rid the town of criminality. The second season delves further into Reacher’s backstory when a member from his Special Investigations Unit is mysteriously killed. Reacher must reunite with his old unit to avenge their friend and investigate a world of corruption and terrorism.
Reacher Season 3 began filming unannounced in July 2023 but was delayed a few weeks later due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. At CCXP 2023 in December (just over a month after the actor’s strike ended), Ritchson officially announced the series was filming its third season. The third season will adapt Lee Child’s 2003 novel Persuader, the seventh book in the author’s Jack Reacher series.
Persuader follows Reacher back again for another venture as he goes undercover in Maine, where he works with the DEA to stop a notorious drug smuggler. The undercover plot of Persuader offers an exciting premise for the series and can introduce new elements from the action genre into the show.
The series has been adapting Lee Child’s novels out of order, providing an exciting and refreshing change of events for readers of the book series. Season 1 adapted Killing Floor, Child’s 1997 debut novel, which won the Anthony and Barry Awards when released. The show’s second season adapted Bad Luck and Trouble, the eleventh book in the Reacher series (four books after Persuader).
We can confirm an educated guess by Reddit user u/TheRoflcopterr that Reacher Season 3 is indeed in development under the working title “Chimp.” Whether this is an inconsequential joke between the talent involved or has some deeper meaning within the context of the series, the true meaning is anybody’s guess. We can speculate that perhaps the titular chimp could be a reference to the countless real-life examples of exotic animal owners feeding cocaine to their monkeys for them to consume.
Alan Ritchson (Titans, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) recently appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, stating, “We’re nearing completion on Season 3,” and described the Persuader novel as “one of the best books there is, a gripping, skillful blend of spies and non-stop action” and added, “I can’t wait for you to see this season.”
We can reasonably assume that Season 3 has finished filming, which can be inferred from Ritchson’s involvement in Playdate, a new action comedy also starring Kevin James, which is now filming in British Columbia.
There is currently no release date set for the third season, but when taking into account that the first season was released seven months after filming wrapped and the second season released 10 months after filming wrapped, we could expect Season 3 in early 2025.
Reacher Season 3 stars Alan Ritchson, Anthony Michael Hall, Sonya Cassidy, Brian Tee, Johnny Berchtold, Roberto Montesinos and Daniel David Stewart. The series is based on the best-selling book series by Lee Child and will be streaming on Prime Video.
