Apple TV’s Foundation is returning this week—here is everything you need to know about Foundation Season 3, including descriptions and episode runtimes.
Foundation is a series based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, spanning various short stories, novellas, and novels. The series is created by David S. Goyer, best known for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and Josh Friedman, best known for his work on Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. Goyer was the showrunner of the first two seasons before stepping down. Tim Southam took over for Season 3.
Foundation Season 3 picks up at the end of Season 2, which, if you remember, makes a time jump of 152 years. The Mule was teased there, and is said to be a major part of season 3.
The logline of the first episode of season 3 reads:
A mysterious new pirate with terrifying abilities—known as the Mule—catches the attention of the Foundation and Empire.

‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode Runtime vs. Seasons 1 & 2

- Foundation Season 2 Total Runtime: 540 Minutes
- Foundation Season 3 Total Runtime: 149 (3 Episodes)
Seasons 1 and 2 have very similar runtimes as you can see. The longest episode of the series is, interestingly, the pilot which runs a whopping 69 minutes. The successive episode is also tied for the second longest in the series at 61.
Even the shortest episode of the series, Season 2 Episode 5, is 47 minutes long, which is more than the typical drama runtime.

When Does ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Release
The show will officially start its release schedule on July 11th at 12 AM PST / 3 AM EST. Do keep in mind, however, that Apple TV usually releases episodes 6 hours earlier than that.
So Episode 1 will release on July 10th at 6 PM PST / 9 PM EST, and Episode 2 will release on July 17th at 6 PM PST / 9 PM EST. So on and so forth. Only one episode will be released on premiere, and an episode will air each week following that.
