‘Among Us 3D’ Review: A Dream Come True

Among Us 3D is an exciting opportunity to experience everything I’ve loved with the original game while also building on top of it but not without some missing features.

From the moment I heard about the release of Among Us 3D, I’ve been through the roof with excitement. I still enjoy the original to this day and finally getting an opportunity to experience the VR version (in some capacity) was something I couldn’t pass up on. The launch of this game also meant I’d be able to see all the maps I’ve spent countless hours on in a 3D space, as well as try out the new Tag game mode.

Among Us 3D is a reimagining of the original Among Us, offering players the opportunity to experience all the iconic maps in a new light by putting players in a 3D setting. The game also challenges players with upgrades to existing tasks as well as new ones altogether. Additionally, “The Infected” or Tag mode offers a new experience from the traditional social deduction mode.

Starting off with the obvious, the transformation to a 3D space is just breathtaking, I loved seeing how all the cosmetics feel a little more wackier when in 3D. The maps are even better. Exploring them in a first-person perspective feels refreshing, though I’ve admittedly tried to make my character jump on numerous occasions and accidentally enabled my voice chat. I also adore how interactive the tasks feel now that we’re in 3D. it feels as though you’re making a real impact rather than just pressing left click a few times.

Speaking of cosmetics, while I love the variety it offers, I’m a bit disappointed that new cosmetics are locked behind a paywall. There are no “beans” in this version of the game, so you’re required to purchase the game’s paid currency, Stardust, to unlock new cosmetics (at the time of writing). Overall, the lack of beans and a leveling system makes the game feel a bit empty, and it doesn’t stop there, as I found that quick-chat matchmaking is very hit or miss. I rarely get full lobbies, nor do I ever have enough players for the Tag mode, which I was very excited to try out.

The moments where I am able to play are an absolute blast, while the matches don’t last very long, I find joy in interacting with my crewmates through the various hand gestures available to us (wave, thumbs up, thumbs down and point). It’s a simple thing that really adds to the fun, especially when playing with VR players and seeing their ability to make any gesture when being accused.

Overall, Among Us 3D was not fully what I had in mind but I still find a lot of enjoyment from it. I hope eventually that the game becomes more active, leading to longer matches as well as a leveling system to make those matches feel even more rewarding. The developers have promised to release limited time modes and new roles over the course of the game’s lifespan, so I eagerly await those.
