‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Receives Summer Release Date
As 2025 kicks off, Netflix has officially shared the release date of Happy Gilmore 2, which will be premiering in the Summer.
Adam Sandler is returning to one of his most beloved and iconic roles, nearly 30 years after the original Happy Gilmore became a cult classic with the release of Happy Gilmore 2, which was picked up by Netflix.
The original film, which followed an aggressive hockey player turned golf prodigy, remains one of Sandler’s most quotable and rewatchable movies, making a sequel something fans have wanted for decades.
When will Happy Gilmore 2 be released?
It has been officially announced that Happy Gilmore 2 will release on Netflix on July 25th.
Sandler’s return as Happy is especially exciting because he’s proven time and time again that he still has incredible comedic energy in Hustle and an argument can be made for Murder Mystery, while also gaining newfound critical respect with films like Uncut Gems. A sequel like this has the chance to be more than just nostalgia bait, even if that is the intention—it has the potential to deliver a hilarious, crowd-pleasing experience while revisiting a character who was perfect for Sandler’s brand of over-the-top, yet oddly heartfelt, comedy.
Beyond the film itself, Happy Gilmore 2 further highlights Netflix’s dominance in the streaming market. Netflix has become Sandler’s creative home, giving him free rein to make whatever projects he wants, from hit comedies to acclaimed dramas. With Happy Gilmore 2, Netflix is proving once again that they can not only bankroll major franchise sequels but also tap into nostalgia in a way that drives massive engagement. Given how many fans still love the original, expect this to be one of Netflix’s biggest comedy releases ever.
It is disappointing however that the film will not be getting a theatrical release at all, due to Netflix’s strategy. The first Happy Gilmore grossed $41 million on a $12 million budget and it goes without saying that this could be doubled, if not tripled in this market. Sure, Netflix doesn’t want to invest in smaller movies to go to theatres now but a comedy that features the return of one of the most iconic comedic characters is the perfect recipe to unite everyone and get the feeling of togetherness within a cinema room, not alone on your sofa.
Unfortunately, comedies have been restricted to digital during the streaming age and it means that they are mass-produced and given tiny budgets so Netflix should lead by example and give Happy Gilmore 2 even just a limited run in cinemas.
Happy Gilmore 2 is directed by Kyle Newacheck and stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, Kid Cudi and more. The film will release on Netflix on July 25th.
