‘Strange Academy’ Might Be Moving Forward at Disney+
After being rumoured for a long time, a new report from a popular scooper has claimed that Marvel Studios’ Strange Academy will be going forward.
As of now, there is no official confirmation from Marvel Studios or Disney+ regarding a Strange Academy series. However, rumors and reports have surfaced suggesting that such a project may be in development. Specifically, a new post from leaker DanielRPK claims that Marvel Studios has officially greenlit Strange Academy and will be moving forward with the show for one season, with the potential for more if the first season does well.
The Strange Academy comic series, which began in 2020, centers on a magical school in New Orleans founded by Doctor Strange to train young sorcerers. The school features a diverse ensemble of professors, including characters like Doctor Voodoo, Scarlet Witch, Magik, and Agatha Harkness, and introduces new students learning to harness their mystical abilities. Given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) recent focus on mystical and supernatural elements, as seen in projects like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Agatha All Along, a series like Strange Academy would align well with the current direction of the MCU. It could also serve as a platform to introduce new, younger characters – which seems to be a consistent trend in current Marvel shows as they appear to be assembling younger superhero teams and expanding the magical side of the Marvel universe.
What Could ‘Strange Academy’ Be About?
A Strange Academy series would be an excellent opportunity for Marvel Studios to delve deeper into the magical side of the MCU while introducing a fresh cast of young sorcerers. The show will likely center on Wong, now the Sorcerer Supreme, taking on the role of a mentor and headmaster at a mystical school created to train the next generation of magic users. Given Wong’s growing prominence in the MCU and his recurring appearances in films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, this project could finally put him in the spotlight as the main character, showcasing his wisdom and depth in leading and protecting this new crop of students.
The story could focus on America Chavez as one of the central figures, allowing her to step into a more prominent role in the MCU. Her unique multiverse-hopping abilities make her a perfect fit for a school of magic, and she could serve as a bridge between the mystical and multiversal aspects of the Marvel universe. This would provide an opportunity to expand her character beyond what was seen in the Doctor Strange sequel, deepening her personal journey and connections with other characters.
It’s also very likely that the show would feature the return of Madisynn, who first appeared in She-Hulk and was the last character that Wong was seen on-screen with. Her offbeat humor and carefree personality could not only bring levity to the story but also serve as a unique perspective on the often intimidating world of magic. Madisynn’s interactions with the students could also further enrich the show’s dynamic, as her unfiltered and unpredictable nature could help bridge the gap between the mystical and the mundane, making the world of magic feel more approachable and relatable. Her presence would also give Wong someone to play off in comedic moments, allowing audiences to see new sides of his character as he navigates running a school and dealing with Madisynn’s antics. Though if this was the case, it would likely see an evolution for Madisynn and show her becoming more serious and taking on an administrative role at the Academy, though we can only theorise for now.
Strange Academy would also allow Marvel to explore magic in greater depth, moving beyond the flashy spells and brief glimpses of mystical artifacts seen so far. The series could dive into the origins of magic and its different disciplines. This exploration could introduce concepts like dark dimension energies, feature ancient magical relics, and go into more detail on already known concepts such as chaos magic, setting the stage for Doctor Strange 3. The academy could serve as a battleground or a key location where Strange himself seeks assistance from Wong and the students, tying the series directly into future films.
Furthermore, the series could naturally lead to projects like Midnight Sons, introducing younger and edgier characters who could take part in darker, supernatural storylines. Villains or conflicts introduced in Strange Academy could have broader implications, affecting the mystical balance of the MCU and requiring intervention from other heroes in interconnected projects.
